A question for the wider group on Tundras

What is in your tool boxes, if you run them?

In mine I have the following:

A shovel, axe, a 20 ton bottle jack, a tool box with both English and Metric deep sockets, crescent wrenches, and assortment of other tools to take care of basic mechanical, electrical, and plumbing issues. I have a couple of different hitches with 2" balls and pins, gloves, two different size ratchet straps, some zip ties, and a few little plastic tabs to hold auto parts and pieces together.

In regard to the bottle jack, I have been looking on here at the different jacks and see the Borderland Offroad jack as highly recommended, but it is only a three ton. It not only is a heavier truck, but coupled with the size of the jack, and the height of the truck, is this Borderland worth carrying? If so, how do you all carry it and where? In the tool box?

Anything else that would be good to add?

As a side note, I do have some jumper cables, but they are not super good, and when we travel we do carry that little pocket jumper and that has served its purpose to this point, so I am covered there.

 

I carry tools, jack, recovery gear, traction boards, extra fluids, spare fuses, abs sensors, plugs, belts, coil packs, bolts, jumper cables, dual spare tires, etc etc

 

What do you think between a bottle jack or the Borderland jack? The Bottle fits better, but not sure what is better for repairs on the side of the road or on the gravel.

 

I have a random grab bag of mismatched tools, tire plug kit, cheap Amazon pump, factory tire tools, and a Walmart special jump box. I could probably be a lil more prepared but I've always been able to make do.

 

I used to run a large bottle jack that fit in the factory location if space is limited. To me having a normal jack is easier and little bit more stable in the dirt etc.

 

A tire kit would be good as well for me, and a pump. Will put that on my list. I do need to also get a large kit of fuses.

 

Good to know. So two questions on that:

1. How do you carry your jack? They are bigger than a bottle jack, and I do not want to have mine just floating around in the bed. I was looking at the old thread of having U Channels to make bed rails, and put a metal ammo can on that with some of the smaller things and make room for a jack, but not sure if that is the best option or not.

2. Is the 3 Ton able to handle a Ram 2500? I went with what I did because it is a 20 T.

 

My Jack lives in a pelican case with foam inserts. Strapped to the bed. For the 2500 should be ok. You’re rarely going to need to lift more than a corner at a time.

 

I have two setups. Day to day and then roadtrip.

Day to day it is a small portable tire pump from Amazon, a battery jumper/charger, straps, socket set, pliers, tip ties.

When road trips come, i grab traction boards, water container and road flares. When I get around to it, I will get a jack but I havent yet. I mostly do pavement, fire roads, and simple trails. I am 2wd and do not want to get in to recovery outside of throwing a board down to get traction again.

 

That is about where I am. While I have 4WD, and it was useful this year twice, so that was good, I usually am not bottomed out on a trail needing much.

With my road trip coming, I am just assessing my gear to see what I should take, or jettison. Hence the jacks.

I do have a full size spare, so I am covered there.

 

That looks good. I may look at some kind of case. My issue is how to lock it down. That can also slide under my toolbox.

That is a good list. I will have to review these, and some of the parts, I didn't think of. I am thinking of the wire heat wraps, etc. It also seems you are carrying some basic parts (CV parts, etc.).

Anyone have a recommendation for a good jack for a 3" lifted tundra?

 

I have heard a mix review of several High lifts, but the biggest complain or concern was how unstead it is when it is put under weight.

I am using a standard bottle jack right now.

 

I have a lot of basic tools but truth be told I have more motorcycle specific tools than truck stuff since my biggest use is hauling bikes to the track and they are much more prone to need tweak or repair away from home than the truck is. That’s the main reason I went with a 2.5 (best) gen

 

I had to stack 2x8's under my bottle jack to lift my Gen 2 Tundra. Which means I had to carry around blocks of wood. Just wondering if anyone had a jack that worked better for trucks like this

Do you race professionally? Motocross?

 

I have seen on a few other forums (while I was looking at jacks) a lot of recommendations for Badlands from Harbor Freight. It does have some adjustable parts that you can lift upward if need be.

 

Definitely not pro. Haha. But do race hare scrambles and ride a little motocross for fun

 

High lifts while very useful in some situations, are 99% poser items. Unless you have sliders, or bumpers with good lift points, they are useless to change a tire. Even with proper lift points, they are nearly useless to change a tire since you have to lift the frame so high off the ground to actually get the tire off the ground, and then once that's achieved they're very unstable.

A bottle jack or scissor jack is small and will lift just about anything to change a tire.

Growing up I had an old Honda 100. Not the biggest bike, but pretty cool to run with when I could.

Wish I had ridden it more, now that I am older.

Thanks for the answer. Right now I run a 20T bottle jack that fits in my tool box. Was thinking about the Borderland jack from Harbor Freight, but I am not able to figure a good storage system (not counting the case mentioned earlier in this thread which will work), and I am looking at what it would take to keep, set up, and maintain these things when I can just get a bottle jack, and pull it out when I need it.

I am also looking at getting some new power tools, but I don't have the money for Milwaukee as the one pinned thread, but I am thinking the Hercules range of tools look pretty solid for my use case.

I have one drill and saw from Menards, and that has been rock solid for the past 10 years or more but I don't use it every day either.

Looks good. I think if it works and is solid, that should be fine.

 

Lift-mate will let you rise the wheel with Hi-lift and slide a stump under the axle or LCA. I agree a bottle or floor jack is easier to use, but they require lumber arrangements off the pavement.
