You're Dad is correct. I didn't want to pull the trigger but felt I should do it myself instead of a stranger with a syringe. When I took Happy in the syringe going in she was looking at me like why are doing this to me. She kept trying to bite the vet as he was injecting the euthanasia. To my shame I held her head down.

I vowed right then I wouldn't let anybody else put a dog of mine down. Will do it myself, just have to be strong. I figure I owe it to them after years of strength and devotion.

I completely get why you do it. I don't hold blame against you either. We all do what we think is right, and after all's said and done, we have to live with it. I applaud your strength in doing something I cannot.

I don’t know you Charles, but i’m shedding a tear for you and your long time friend, Magnus. Undoubtedly he was always there when you needed him in the past, but now when you needed him the most he’s no longer there to comfort you. From here on, all the great memories of him will help comfort you in the future. You were lucky to have him as a friend and companion.

    RIP Magnus

Damn; so sorry to hear this. Dogs are better than people. The ability to give and receive unconditional love is innate to dogs and something I wish all of us as people could do more often. It truly is one of the most unique and profound relationships in my opinion. The only drawback is that they don’t ever live long enough…..as heartbreaking as it is, neither you or magnus would have had it any other way. You were both blessed and lucky to have found each other and enjoyed the time together. I am very sorry.

It's been more than a year since my last one... still sucks hard, but I'm finally getting to a point where I can remember all the fun awesome shit we got to do and not so much thought goes into those last few days.

I'm sorry you're going through this right now :(

Did Magnus come from This is Houston? I know that's been a charity you've favored for a while...

If you need an awesome little treat for him to enjoy in the sun... mix up some non-fat yogurt w/fresh blueberries, drop them on some parchment paper and pop them in the freezer... they'll be ready to enjoy after several hours

You and Magnus will be in my thoughts... :(

    Someone's cutting onions at work....

Seriously though...I feel for you, brother. I didn't *think* I was a dog person until I had to take our dog, Domino, to have him put to sleep once we realized he had bone cancer that had taken over one leg/hip.

Driving on the way home, I called my Dad and told him "I guess I'm a dog person!" through the ugly sobs, tears, etc. Ended up burying him by hand underneath our front yard tree (and in Missouri soil, that is a chore), because he was the BEST dog we owned.

My beautiful boy passed on Oct 17th 2024. I still morn and miss him dearly. I have no words for the pain you will feel, and none made me feel my loss any less acutely.

A few things I did made sense. I gave all of Banksy usable items including food, treats, medication, etc. to the shelter where we adopted him. They gladly took everything.

We also went through his pictures and made a photo album of his life. It is a beautiful coffee table book. Through this we remember all the great times and get to share with other people.

To anyone reading this, and not to take away from this post, PLEASE do not give your dog LIBRELA. See my post here: https://www.tundras.com/threads/for-anyone-with-an-older-dog.152286/

I didn’t know what to do when we lost Beans due to liver cancer in August 2023. He was literally my wife and kids best friend and our lives included him and his brother in everything we did. Vacation sites had to be dog friendly, cars had to be big enough to accommodate kids and dogs, etc. I decided to commission a portrait artist and he came up with this that I got in October of 2023. I still tear up every time i see it in the mirror.

We rescued Winnie last November (took us over a year to feel ok to do so). When the time is right maybe you will get another dog, but until then find things that remind you of the good times and give yourself the grace to know that you provided an incredible life for magnus.

It's good to have ashes I think. I sprinkle Happy's ashes wherever we go, the Colorado River, Virgin river, up in the Colorado high country. Her ashes are in six states, I like to think a portion of her has traveled after her death.

We keep adopting dogs even though we know there will be heartbreak in the future. Anybody that is in the Four Corner states, consider adopting from souldog.org in Ft Lupton, CO. My avatar has their mobile spay/neuter trailer pulled by the Sequoia.

Charles, It is so sad to see this. It is not easy by any means. I just had to put my male Jack Russell down 2 weeks ago today due to cancer. I got him at 6 months and he would have been 13 in May. It hit me 10 times harder than when my dad passed away several years ago.

    It does. :(

I will say this - and it's not a 'fun' memory but it's a somewhat comforting one.

I felt like absolute SH*T when we had to put our dog Domino down. My wife did not want to let me do it until he progressed VERY quickly in like a week's time.

Anyways....they gave me as much time as I wanted to hug on him and say goodbye...and then I held him as they gave him the shot. He whined a bit, and I just said "It's OK, boy...it'll be OK." (Dammit...knock it off with the onions already!)

He sort of rolled his eyes at me as if to say "YOU ain't the one getting the shot pal" and then put his head on his paws and went to sleep.

My point - his LAST memory in this world was me comforting him, and him trusting me that the pain wouldn't last. Not a 'fun' memory...but there are MUCH worse memories a dog could have than to fall asleep in his owner's arms. :)

For the sake of stating the obvious, THIS ABSOLUTELY SUCKS. And I am so sorry for your loss. I think animals instinctively know when it is time, and also realize when a human friend is making the right decision. Magnus has felt your love and companionship every day of his life since entering your world. He will feel the same when the time comes for him to leave the material world. We had Beans euthanized the same way - at our house and wrapped in his favorite blanket. We buried him in our back yard with a granite plaque to mark his resting place (which was the same place that his ball went through the fence EVERY time we played chuck-it).

There is literally nothing that takes the sting away from missing him - but making sure we keep him in our thoughts (like when we hang his christmas ornaments every year or we speak about him in a funny story at the dinner table, etc) helps us remember the good times he provided our family. We don't deserve dogs......in fact, I always say if society could effectively treat each other like we treat our dogs (and vice versa), we would be in a much better place.

Quite simply, dogs are the best. I cannot imagine life without them........but it certainly hurts to lose them. I wouldn't have traded our time with Zoe or Beans and now Baxter and Winnie for anything else in this world.

Took the day off work today and spent it with Magnus. He got a bunch of stuff he doesn't usually get to eat....and the farts sure indicated that. Wesley and I went to Petco and got him one of his favorite treats - peanut butter-filled femur bones.

Wesley also got his first fish...

Later, my mom came over to say goodbye. Brought him a toy:

Magnus always greeted her visits with tail wags and face hugs - sticking his face between legs expecting lots of petting and rib rubs. She got a little emotional on her way out the door and gave him a kiss. It was all I could do to keep it together.

    Tomorrow my life changes forever.

Thank y'all for the beautiful stories and kind words. This forum is a testament to kindred spirits bound not only by trucks, but life in general. It's good to know that good people are out there....

Magnus is a fine hound and I'm certain he's woken up everyday and lived it with you like it was his last, enjoying every minute of the time you've spent together. Regardless if you're religious/spiritual/etc., and although tomorrow will be the last day in his current physical vessel, matter cannot be created nor destroyed and as such, his energy will return to the universe from whence it came and surround you, I, and everyone else. Magnus won't just be at your house after tomorrow, he'll be all around you everywhere you go in everything you see and everything you hear. Try and smile through the sorrow as best you can and to quote The Great Bambino in The Sandlot "heroes get remembered, but legends never die". Stand by what I said earlier, I'll be pouring one out tomorrow for old boy Magnus and maybe one day I'll get to meet him too, who knows?
