I am at 32K and I have noticed my engine using the 0/20 oil has gotten noisy as in busy, not tapping lately. Not bad but seems like timing chain(s) or other subtle noises. Is this common?

They are very noisey engines. I noticed it on my test drive of my truck with 7 miles. Still makes the same racket loud after 81,000 miles. That's why the smaller v8 i think 4.6 or 4.7 with timing belt is so quiet it doesn't have a big loud timing chain like the 5.7.

My wife feels the need to constantly say that my truck sounds like it’s diesel.

    :facepalm:it’s normal.

Here is what ChatGPT says about why the iForce 5.7L V8 is so loud at start up. It sounds like it is for a great reason.

The noise you hear on startup is influenced by design features like a chain‐driven cam system and a lubrication scheme that prioritizes getting oil to the top end first. In many engines, a chain drive can produce more noticeable mechanical sounds at startup—especially before full oil pressure is established and the chain tensioners settle into their optimal operating condition. Similarly, a top–down oiling system is designed to protect critical components (like cam lobes and valve train parts) immediately upon startup, but it may mean that lower engine components receive full lubrication just a fraction later, which can also contribute to transient noise.

That said, these characteristics aren’t necessarily indicative of a problem. They’re part of the engine’s overall design strategy—balancing durability and performance. In many modern V8 designs, including the iForce 5.7L, such engineering choices are deliberate trade-offs. The startup noise is more a byproduct of the system doing its job (i.e., rapidly protecting key components) rather than a flaw.

So, while the chain drive and top–down oiling system do contribute to that distinctive startup sound, it’s really the combination of these design choices (along with factors like oil pressure buildup and overall engine architecture) that creates the characteristic noise you’re hearing.

Even with 5w 30 it's still one of the loudest V8 ever made. I've tried 5w 30 it just rattles like 10% louder on cold start up and sounds the same or maybe 2% less noise when warm.

You have the 2UZ correct? Assuming you want to switch to 5w-30 in your 2005 Tundra listed in your profile? In that case isn't that motor spec'd for specifically 5w-30?

It's weird if someone says 5w 30 makes less noise nobody says anything.. But if someone says 0w 20 makes their motor tick less people call BS. That makes me want to not belive them.

Your 2UZ wants 5w30 anyway. Are you running 0w20 in it?

Thinner engine oil isn’t going to quiet your engine down compared to thicker engine oil. 5w30 is thicker
