Yes, I reset. I'm mostly suburban driving and 35% freeway. Mileage since rebuild (500 miles so far) is terrible. Engine ran perfectly before. This one also, but I hear the lifters more in the engine bay. It's very smooth but lost 2mpg easy
    Break in period maybe?

We just had our first kid, and I’ve quickly realized that as a family, we have or are quickly going to outgrow my 3rd Gen Tacoma. I have been considering a Tundra, but given the cost, my budget really only allows me to look at a used ‘22 or ‘23, which, given the recall, isn’t the most confidence-inspiring for longevity and reliability.

I will say that I am impressed with how Toyota has handled this issue from an outside perspective. I’m sure those who have had to wait months or have had their engines fail would argue differently.

It could be the lack of sleep with a newborn, but I feel like these engine issues have dampened the Toyota tax on these Tundras, which is a potential good opportunity. There is also the argument that you can drive the original engine for as long as possible and then get an entire new engine at some point, which on paper sounds great.

For those of you who have been impacted, or even those who haven’t but are on the list, would you do it again or would you avoid these years?

I have read that Toyota is offering a 12-month warranty from the date of replacement or will honour the original warranty, whichever is greater. Is this true?

I have also read some folks saying that the replacement engine feels like it runs a lot better than the original, and potentially between mpg. Can anyone speak to this?

2022 1794 had 43k on it; no issues to date before the swap. Had a swap done last week. They kept it for a week to ensure everything was good before I picked it up. They did the gas line recall at the same time. Had no issues since pickup. I don't know if it's me, but the engine seems quieter, and the throttle response seems better. I always had an intermittent lag, even after doing the TSB for lag. It's not as noticeable now.

I'm having the same experience. Truck was at dealer for a week and a half......did 3 outstanding recalls.......taking it easy on the break in and keeping an eye on the gas mileage to see if it comes up.....2022 1794 with 19000 miles......dealer appears to have done an excellent job on the engine replacement.

Louisiana…..Northshore Toyota…….for anyone having apprehensions about dealers not “wanting” to do the engine replacement, the dealer is very well compensated…the tech is still at 13.6 hours.

Just got my truck back from the dealer. Dropped it off Wednesday morning and got it back Saturday around noon. Said mine was the 6th one they have done. Haven't had a ton of time to drive it but the new engine runs noticeably smoother than my original. My original had kind of a rough idle and already had 2 turbo failures by the time they replaced my engine with the recall. I'll update with anything else I should notice.

I'm in Phase 2 replacement schedule (now March?) and truck has not failed and getting 17city to 21hwy MPG.

    I plan to use https://www.sanmarcostoyota.com/

Curious if anyone else plans to use this location.

I did a service bay drive by after my last service in Jan and it appears they are using the cab removal approach.

Got mine back today. Seems to run smooth. Maybe we could share our info in a similar format like this?
    Year 2022
    Miles on truck 39000
    Issues before replacement? No
    Dealer used: Toyota of Plano
Test miles put on by tech 20
New and old engine serial numbers on receipt: no
truck cleaned in or out? No
    New engine air filter? No
Service advisor gave break in requirements? Stated none required. Drive as usual.
Service advisor stated to expect some burning smells possible first few miles.
Additional warranty on new engine? Stated 4 year 60k. Not written on receipt.
    Comments:
It seems to shift hard from 1st to 2nd. The rest seem normal. Maybe a little sportier than before. Almost like sport mode in regular. When I got home a message popped up saying would I like to exit service mode. Hmm. Did the tech forget to do that? I chose yes. I haven't driven it since. Runs smooth, all systems work. They didn't clean the engine beauty cover either, so I guess that part switches over.

Edit: this morning the truck shifting normally in both regular and sport modes. Having it in service mode must have accounted for the hard shifts.

That's odd. My dealer told me it was a 1 year warranty. I had already bought the extended warranty before all this though so I'm not too worried. I did not see any warranty information in writing in the paper work they gave me when I picked the truck up.

Maybe he was implying that there is no additional warranty beyond the 4/60. It will be interesting to hear what others share. I would encourage others to press for warranty info in writing and please share it if you get any.

I dropped my truck off two days ago for the engine swap. I had a list of other issues I wanted taken care of at the same time since I have just under 34,000 miles. Window seals, whistling mirror, creek in center console, and buzzing gauge cluster at certain speeds. The service rep called me yesterday and we discussed these issues in detail, they will be billing Toyota for all the repairs. To be fair, none of these issues were really bad and I would probably fix them with foam tape myself, but if I can get them replaced for free I will. Will update on engine and other repairs.

Did they provide a loaner? I'm in Ft. Worth, and the local dealer said no loaner will be available. I'm considering Toyota of Plano because of them being right next to the HQ.

They offered a loaner but I declined as I have other vehicles. Per Toyota, I would read the recall letter back to your dealer, I'm fairly certain it states on there a loaner will available. Whether they say that will delay your appointment is another discussion but for them to say point blank no loaners... I don't think that is Toyotas position.

    Picked up truck tonight-
    Year 2022
    Miles on truck 58485
Issues before replacement? None at all
Dealer used: Stapp Interstate Toyota Frederick CO
Test miles put on by tech 11
New and old engine serial numbers on receipt: No
truck cleaned in or out? No
New engine air filter? No, the same filters are still installed.
Service advisor gave break in requirements? Stated none required. Drive as usual.
Service advisor stated to expect some burning smells possible first few miles.
I did smell some in my garage but it’s not concerning.
Additional warranty on new engine? 1 year. I have a 100,000 mile used car warranty since I bought the truck with 8500k on it (it was an executive truck that was turned in) and she said that superseded it.
    Comments:
It seemed to shift a little hard when I first got in. The truck was ice cold. After it warmed up it seemed to loosen up. Drove about 50 miles tonight. Really felt good on the last 10 miles home. Idle seems smoother, whereas the old engine was always a tad rough. Turbos sound real nice. Haven’t tried Sport or Tow/Haul yet but in Normal it was noticeably more responsive on the throttle.

So far, so good. Adding that it only took 2 days, and if I hadn’t been busy I could have dropped it off Tuesday at 8am and picked it up Thursday at 8am. That is impressive.

Picked mine up yesterday. Dropped off Tuesday at 4:00 pm, picked up Friday at 4:00 pm.
22 Tundra 33,500 miles. No issues prior to swap.
Dealership: Fred Beans Toyota of Flemington
Engine has weird smell which I was advised would last around 50 miles.
Truck has smoother idle, but otherwise feels and sounds the same maybe a touch smoother.
I had a few other minor issues that they looked at. They fixed the center console squeak but gave me the typical run around on the window trim pieces.
No advice on break in. The mpg seems normal.

I am examining the paperwork a little more in depth this morning. It show ATF as a line item. I was under the impression the transmissions were staying sealed up. The only other spot would be the transfer case where this is used?

I am going to call them here in a little bit and ask.

Glad you had a decent experience with Stapp. That's where I bought my truck, but I'm leery of their service dept based on a bad experience.

It's kinda troubling they didn't clean your truck after completing the work, but I guess that's tolerable, if everything else was done properly.

Did they give you a loaner?

When you uncouple the motor from the torque converter, I believe some fluid will leak out if the torque converter started to come out of the transmission. If that's the case, hopefully the seal wasn't damaged or they replaced it if it was. Keep an eye out for transmission fluid leaks from the bellhousing
