it really doesn't see much sun because I run a topper. But it has held up well to abuse.

this video is what sold me on the product.

Just called today, they told me about 600-800 depending on the condition of the current paint. I also asked about spraying it with Raptor liner and they are supposed to get back me tomorrow with a price.

Dang. Just sand it down and raptor liner it yourself. Cost ya about $100

YouTube videos of you want some creative “painting booth” options. Scaffolding and shower curtains was a pretty good one.

Just roll it on. No need for a spray booth. Can even do it outside if needed.

If you roll on does it come out thicker? Maybe depends on roller used

All about technique for both spray and roll on as to how thick, thin and what texture.

Finally found one! Not in the best shape. It's for a DC. No keys, needs rear window struts, chipped along bottom. Clear is peeling but will put bedliner it. Has everything I was looking for, windoors, rack, removable front slider. Had to go to TX to get it. Found on FB seven minutes after listed. $75.00. I actually cracked the two front corners when I tightened it down. Thought I read on here about someone trimming front corners for better fit but can't locate it. I think I can make it work but if not maybe use windoors and rack on a nicer one.

    Imma keep it stock
Sure they can. They were certainly an add on and not molded that way from the factory. You may have to peel back the carpet to see how they are attatched, but yeah, they can come out.

IMHO, I would leave the driver's side for personal storage (and swap someone with a Leer for a transparent windoor on the passenger side), but that's just me.

EDIT: It looks like the boxes are supported by the roof rail?

This is really, really annoying that after all this time, our thread got moved out of the first gen forum. This is where these things go to die in my experience. Do we have new mods on staff or something?

This has happened twice now. @Squatting Pigeon can we get a definite answer on this topic here? It appears some moderators have differing opinions.

Hey @ColoradoTJ or @T-Rex266 or another mod, can we get this shuffled back into the 1st gen forum? It got moved again. I get it, it’s about camper shells, but it contains primarily 1st-gen specific info. Seems like it should stay over in 1st gen subforum, think?

I haven't checked it out personally yet, I just noticed this 1st gen tundra for sale listed online near me and the shell caught my eye. The pics are from the seller/dealer, but was wondering if anyone had scene or encountered this type yet as it is the first I've seen like it.

A body shop might do it if they aren't too busy. Body shops are production shops, so they typically do not like to pick up odd jobs like this, unless they are slow.

A few things to consider. It will be more expensive if you want it a different color because of additional labor. Either way, they will strip the existing paint, prime it and then respray it. Typically 2 stage paint. 3 stage if you want a pearl color.

If it has been repaired before then any corrections could cost extra.

If you want cheap and don't care about quality, MAACO is about as cheap as it gets. They generally run 1 stage paint, but even their 2 stage isn't that long lasting. It's not recommended, but you can use them for cheap-cheap.

Good eye, and that makes sense since it does have that roof rack. I like that idea actually, might be convenient to have at least one, and still have more space by removing the other. If I check it out this weekend I'll report back (finally going to have decent weather this weekend to get some truck work done so that'll keep me busy)

Thanks, that's good info. Even MAACO said they charge about 600-800, and 600 for Raptor lining. For the price, I'll end up just finding an off color shell that is in good shape and checks all or most boxes, sanding, and putting liner on myself--will just need to ask a friend to borrow their garage or driveway/backyard (condo living sucks in that regard).

If the world and information revolved around categorization alone, I agree. Looking at this from the bigger picture, in a few different ways….

From a revenue perspective, revenue-driven entities who rely on funds for operation/employment/profit, the site owner benefits more having it in the 1st gen forum where it’ll get a hundred clicks per day by interested 1st gen users than it will with the 3-4 clicks per day it may get from users researching camper shells.

Thats assuming anyone can find it; a lot of people use the “search in this subforum only” feature when looking for generation-specific content, and if this thread is living in the camper shells subforum, someone hanging in their respective 1st gen subforum is unlikely to ever find it. It’s probably the most logical reason to keep this in 1st gen forum - if someone is searching for “camper shell” and “in this subforum only”, this thread would pop at the top of the list, and the 1st reply gives them all the generation-specific critical info they need.

Beyond that, there’s a higher risk of misinformation from later-gen users being involved, which is liable to happen once you enter a more-generation-generic subforum.

Many of the more active 1st gen folks helping out more than others never set foot in other subforums (there’s too much to help with in 1st gen as it is) so once that thread gets moved, we’re virtually unable to help those 1st gen folks out with their problems, which looks bad on Tundras.com as a whole, takes away part of what’s special about this place - you can get pretty generation-specific info here, quickly.

The latter is especially rough for me because people are always tagging @Shifty instead of @shifty` so even if they tag me looking for specific help after the thread moves, if they miss the tick at the end of my username, we all lose.

Threads are more than categories, with vehicles, it’s about generations. If the base content of a thread is generation specific, even if it involves audio, wheels and tires, add-ons, it’s a disservice to relocate to a thread where people may get misinformation. A 1st gen guy is going to know everything about how those mods fit a first gen. Someone interested in camper shells and drives a 2nd or 3rd gen probably won’t.

I'll suggest we break it down in sub forums 1st 2nd 3rd gen.

Thanks again for all you do on this site. It is appreciated and I personally hope you know that. :fistbump:

It’s a two way street, brother. I’ve both built and moderated my fair share of forums over the years, and I know what a thankless job the staff have. That in mind, know any words I share above aren’t jabs at any of the moderation and above. Just friendly, logical suggestions coming from 25yrs+ of working in tech, with customer facing services. I try not to come from a place of criticism on stuff like this. It doesn’t help anyone.

It's a tough one, I agree. I've gotten accustomed to how the first gen forum operates, but it's a nightmare if you're trying to have a site laid out for easy searching. 90% of questions get asked and answered in the 'what have you done to your first gen' thread, or 'lunch table', and while they can be searched and I've found stuff in there by searching, it's kind of a needle in a haystack. Where an actual thread with an easily searchable title is far easier to find.

But in general, the "regulars" run it the way they want, and we all enjoy it and are used to it and it works. We get the occasional suspension thread that gets moved out of the first gen forum to die, which is unfortunate. It's even more unfortunate with this thread. But maybe we'll get used to it.

It's good to keep a site well organized. Of course anyone who uses a shared file management system for work knows different people organize things different ways. Depending on how your brain works, you want things laid out differently. Not everyone's going to agree on what that is.

This thread has become almost like a sticky in the first gen section. Like the LBJ failure thread. Move that thread into the Suspension section, and it'll be a real mess with non-first gen owners posting a bunch of wrong info.

This thread is similar. I get why it got moved here, but...In terms of new people finding it easily, I wonder how many people find threads through search engines, vs typing Tundras.com into their browser then scanning the site for the most obvious subforum to find their answer? With a search engine, it doesn't much matter if it's in the first gen section or the topper section. But it probably makes someone who likes to see their site organized a certain way happy.
