Rear main seal

Hello, Toyota informed me that my rear main seal is leaking on 2017 Tundra. They sent me a picture of it (attached). It costs way too much atm, couple $k, for us. Does anyone know of any sealant that can be used to seal it instead? TIA.

No. You can’t add sealant to stop a leak. It has to be taken apart, cleaned, and resealed

 

Kinda with Danman34 on this one. Not seeing an issue other than road grime causing dirt to stick. Wipe and check again in a week. NOTICE to all. A rear main seal fix is expensive and mostly preventable by changing an $11 breather vent every 4-5 years with a wrench and $0.01 worth of teflon tape. Any adjustable wrench I guarantee you already own and this is incredibly simple.

 

I see. Thank you for the suggestion, I’ll do that. I’ll try to find the breather vent you’re referring to and change it.

 

You will most likely only find the 90930-A3001 as the 90930-03031 was the old number. They are the same thing.

1. Please don't use a sealant or any of the other snake oil products.

2. Change your PVC valve

3. Until it's dripping bad enough to cause then oil to spray on your exhaust, I wouldn't worry about it. Just add oil if needed

 

Where is this breather located?

 

Just type in Tundra Rear Differential Breather in Google and hit images. When you are at the back of your truck look under the trailer hitch forward at the rear differential. It will be sticking out the top on the left/drivers side. As said before, this is incredibly easy preventive maintenance. Once you do it you will understand.

 

You're a bit mixed up on your parts here.

The rear main seal is on the back of the engine where the transmission bolts up.

Rear diff axle seals can blow out due to a plugged breather.

Honestly i don't see a leak. Am I missing something?

If the dealer is scamming you are they to lazy to smear wet oil on it before taking the pic? I guess they want to take 3k from you and not have to do anything. Not even have to wipe oil off of it....
