I have a 2006 double cab and everything works except the odometer. It shows but doesn't count up miles. Trip odometer still works. Any ideas what could be wrong with it

Speedometer works? Have you checked to make sure all abs sensors work?

No abs issues that I am aware of. No abs light on the dash. Only light on dash is a TPS sensor light as of now. Check engine light is blown found that out today. Has p011 and p021 codes for vvt solenoids

Did you pull the code or a shop? Not all scanners can read abs codes

I did. I know I need to have a shop check to be certain also. My main thing is had a few days it was a speed sensor but I'm not sure since the trip odometer works and speedometer works but main odometer doesn't change from current mileage

Check the ecu info in the scanner, see if the mileage is different vs the physical odometer

    So, here's the weird thing.

On the '05-'06 specifically, all of the lights on the dash cluster are LEDs soldered to the board. So for the check engine light to be burnt out points to a cluster problem ... weird.

On the '05-'06 specifically, speed is calculated based on ABS sensor input, so if your ABS sensors are intact at each wheel and functioning, you should show speed and calculate mileage, I would think - mileage is strictly stored on the cluster and nowhere else which points to a cluster problem ... weird.

If this truck is something you just bought, I'm wondering if someone hacked the cluster to intentionally disable the check engine light, in order to hide the fact there was an issue. We've seen it one other time already this past year. In the process, they may very well have damaged another trace on the circuit board, i.e. something for the odometer.

So, I'm going to ask the really stupid questions here:
    • Are you sure it's a Tundra cluster for your year (2005-2006) and not an earlier model cluster and/or a Sequoia cluster? (post a pic, we'll know instantly)
    • Have you popped out the cluster yet, just to verify the wiring up to it is intact, and a rodent didn't get to it, nobody spliced into anything, and maybe you attempt to disconnect/reconnect, or look at the back of the cluster for signs of tampering?
    • Have you checked the fuses in the dash to make sure no fuses are popped?
    • Do you see any signs of water damage to the fuse box or gauge cluster, or any evidence anything was leaking in the dash? (leaks from the a-pillar into the fusebox are semi-common)

Worth noting, I'm fairly sure it's illegal in all 50 states to tamper with a cluster in that way, so may be worth reporting so it doesn't fall back on you.

So pulled the cluster today and has definitely been out and disassembled before. Did find a tag on engine that states timing belt was done in Feb 2019 and vehicle had 221000 at that time. I'm guessing cluster has been changed to lower reading most likely and isn't working correctly. Going to order a new cluster and go from there I guess. Sucks because truck runs amazing and I'm not overly concerned with the mileage as I know these last for ever just want to get it fixed

Yeah turning back mileage is illegal so you might want to do something about that, but other than that glad the timing belt was done! (You might want to pop one of the covers off just to take a peek at it

Bummer. Yeah, and you gotta wonder what else was done to the damn thing now. What else they were hiding etc.

But hey, replacement cluster time, ideally from another 2006 Tundra specifically. They're not hard to come by, and if you're having trouble finding one, www.car-part.com may help you source one locally. If I were you, I'd actually go to facebook marketplace and search for: 2006 tundra parts

Chances are you'll find someone locally, and with a cluster in better shape.

That's my plan. Question now is will the new cluster show the correct mileage when I install it

Nope. Mileage is stored inside the cluster itself. You'll never again know what the original mileage was, but you could ballpark the mileage based on the sticker, and DMV registration data. You can usually look back on the yearly registrations, and if you have 2-3 years of registration info available, calculate the mileage gap year to year, and factor that to figure out ballpark where you are.

There's a special process to have a cluster's mileage data updated. And if you, at any point, provided the mileage while registering the truck, and it was less than a previously recorded mileage, your vehicle will forever be tagged with "mileage discrepancy". Some states (like mine, and Alabama I know of) just consider the mileage invalid after a period of time. My truck is tagged as such IIRC.

    1) someone owes me $20

    2) if that cluster has been out I wouldn't trust the sticker on the engine that you can just buy on Amazon or fleabay. Easy $10 to add value to a beat to shit truck.

it's 3-4 10mm on the cover. I believe passenger side is easiest and you can visually inspect the belt to see if it was changed. Fresh rubber = good belt

y'all got too much faith in humanity. This truck has now fallen into the "I bought someone else's problem"category.

    trust nothing. Check everything.

For sure. I regret making the trade in a way but in another I don't because at the end of the day I still got rid of a rusty jeep wrangler tj for a Toyota tundra
