Do a bit more testing please.

Have you tried operating the door with the emergency release pulled? Then push the wall button. See if the carriage moves after doing this. If it moves, it's not the board, obviously.

Second test is to take a flat head screwdriver and jump the wire posts on the power head. If it cycles, then you again know the board is good.

Yep. Tried that with no results. Just a click from the unit...zero movement. Did a manual open and close in case it was stuck (-3* this AM) but no dice.

I've fixed a few in my time. I won't mess with the spring though.

Good to know that you can manually open the door, so we know that the spring is good, that was going to be my next question.

I think you may be opener shopping.

Consider the belt drive units if you go the replacement route.

    They are so quiet.

    Same.

The other year, I had to have the main door (2 car) spring replaced. Hired an expert for that.

I hope I can end your confusion.
As men, and as men that use tools, (I will refrain from using the phrase playing with our tools, although there's likely a fair bit of that given the subject matter) we should all be familiar with the concept of a "BFH".
If you're not familiar; Big eFFing Hammer.

Applying that same naming strategy to the previously referenced picture of an actress with ginormous T's (no, not thighs) and you should have your answer.

    Maybe BFTT's

Ah ha moment. And clarity. Can't believe Google doesn't offer this as one of their 10 or so meanings. We can consider this as an epic fail on their part.

    Near miss story:
Anybody remember the old style extension (versus modern torsion) springs used for garage doors?
My dad's garage had those when I was growing up. This was before they got smart and "captured" them on a heavy gage wire to hold them in place should they break.
Had one of those let go right over my head, smacked the 2X6 support bracket anchoring it to the rafter side and completely blew that out. It sprung back, brushed my shoulder as it fell and landed at my feet.
    Pure luck and/or a guardian angel looking over a 13 y/o kid.
Moral of the story: Don't screw with springs under tension.

Springs are one of the only things on this earth that truly scare me. Stored energy like that can be chaotic. I learned and developed a healthy respect/fear when I was about 15. My dad and I were working on my first vehicle that I had just bought. We needed a spring compressor to take the struts apart but lived away from town. So we did what anyone else in that situation would do and made a spring compressor with what we had. We had a bunch of all thread so we heated one end up and bent a hook on it. We made two of them so we could pull equally on both sides. It worked great for the first one. Then while compressing the second one the bent ends on both pieces of the all thread broke at the same time. I had just moved away from standing over them about 3 seconds earlier. It came apart with so much force that it blew a hole in the garage roof. (open rafters, but still about 20 feet up)

I feel like that one is fairly self evident, especially when posted in conjunction with a picture of Christina Hendricks.

This would have been completed earlier, but I didn’t feed the belt crimp through the cradle and had to take it all down to re-do :annoyed:
