Yeah they're cheap cars built around a giant battery and honestly some pretty amazing engineering.

I think a used one would be a great in-town commuter. Let someone else take that giant depreciation hit, lol

    :thumbsup::thumbsup:
Regarding Teslas, the model is push them out as quickly as possible while working your people into the ground, and maximize profits (although oddly enough the profit part doesn’t seem all that crucial at times). This produces a less than ideal product, and quality control is seemingly discouraged; or so I’ve heard:thumbsup:

Did anyone else out of the blue get a Toyota Connected Services trial reinstatement this morning? My late Feb '23 gen 3 build was NOT in the recall window, but I am curious to know if this has anything to do with it. The connected services are the safety and service only and not any of the other goodies you can subscribe to.

If I was still commuting I'd buy a used EV, install 220V in the garage to charge overnight. Even contractors that are using 1/2 tons could benefit from an EV truck if it's only local use.

Yeah, the downtime and nuisance of periodic fluid changes are eliminated with an EV.

So, saw on the post engine replacement thread about a dealership that prefers to remove the cab instead of following Toyota’s guidelines. If that was an option that works out to about the same time (which it appears to be), this guy shouldn’t have to pay extra to get his engine replaced that way to negate lift.

Lol at "less than ideal". No one else comes close to Tesla in the EV world.

You should watch TCCN's review. He's very impressed by the engineering. They even created an entirely new wiring architecture at 48v for the CT that requires far less raw materials, and the CEO gave all the blueprints away to the domestic automakers. Their stuff is as close to open-source as it can get.

Once they sort out their full unsupervised self driving, it's game over.
Hey man, you know you can type in the same post you quote another user in, right? It seems like you hit "quote" then hit send, then sometimes type out a reply and hit send again. You can just start typing under the quote in the same reply.

Just spotted this drive my tundra took while sitting at the dealership. Hopefully it was for research purposes.

Just a short test drive. Toyota dealers usually test drive cars after a powertrain or suspension repair. Lexus dealers almost ALWAYS test drive cars even after a simple service like an oil change. They want to make sure there are no strange noises or drivability issues (shifting, brakes, alignment).

I agree but they have had it since June and i know the new engine hasn't been installed so I'm not sure the reason for the quick drive and why the harsh handling. Doesn't bother me much just weird that they did it. Supposedly my parts came in on Saturday so maybe they just took it for a drive pre swap to get a baseline.

Off-topic, but BTW Precision Toyota shop is terrible. When I moved to Tucson, I had a serious disagreement with them. Expensive, and they lie about services. I have been servicing my cars with Desert Toyota for the past 5 years and I have been lucky to find a very good service advisor who introduced me to their Master Diagnostic Tech. I don't have any complaints about DT.

Funny thing is that I've had better luck buying at Precision but better luck with service at Desert. Sales at Desert are typical, try to sell you nitrogen in the tires, protection packages, etc, but not the service side.

I can take it to desert if I need more service done. Didn’t seem like they have steered me wrong but the truck was also brand new. Hopefully they can change an engine correctly.

We just had our first kid, and I’ve quickly realized that as a family, we have or are quickly going to outgrow my 3rd Gen Tacoma. I have been considering a Tundra, but given the cost, my budget really only allows me to look at a used ‘22 or ‘23, which, given the recall, isn’t the most confidence-inspiring for longevity and reliability.

I will say that I am impressed with how Toyota has handled this issue from an outside perspective. I’m sure those who have had to wait months or have had their engines fail would argue differently.

It could be the lack of sleep with a newborn, but I feel like these engine issues have dampened the Toyota tax on these Tundras, which is a potential good opportunity. There is also the argument that you can drive the original engine for as long as possible and then get an entire new engine at some point, which on paper sounds great.

For those of you who have been impacted, or even those who haven’t but are on the list, would you do it again or would you avoid these years?

I have read that Toyota is offering a 12-month warranty from the date of replacement or will honour the original warranty, whichever is greater. Is this true?

I have also read some folks saying that the replacement engine feels like it runs a lot better than the original, and potentially between mpg. Can anyone speak to this?

I did acquire a 2022 Tundra and I'm at 40k and in the Phase 2 replacement group. No issues as of yet. I love the truck.
I need to get through the replacement experience in order to answer the "do it again" question. But if it is a smooth experience it fits nicely into my long term plan.
I try to get 10-12 years out of my trucks. Previous was a 2011 Ford F150 Ecoboost. Still smooth at 270k and about two years of that was combination highway and fairly heavy ranch and trailer work.
Your need for dependability until the replacement may be enough to avoid for now, or get an engine replaced vehicle.
    Tough call.

I would scrutinize a used 3rd gen the same way any other used vehicle should be. Would not let the recall bother me. You could play it safe and make sure it’s in the recall window so you are guaranteed a new motor. You could get a sweet deal if you use the recall as leverage. Its an awesome truck. Just my 2c.

1,500 miles on a 2025. Hopefully it wasn’t a spun main bearing due to contamination.

IMO, the debris issue wasn’t fixed because in the current iteration of manufacturing and/or design, there’s an inherent flaw and it can’t be fixed. Toyota has been telling us it’s a simple contamination issue since they admitted it was happening in 2023. Toyota “fixed” the issue several times. Keep in mind that motors manufactured in Japan are having the same exact issue as those manufactured in Alabama. Head scratcher, right? And this same issue (3.4TT motors eating bearings) can be traced back to the first iteration of the 3.4 twin turbo, which was found in the 2018 Lexus LS500. Nothing about this points to a simple debris issue, because Toyota could and would have fixed something simple long before this turned in to a billion dollar PR nightmare. And even after it became a PUBLIC billion dollar PR nightmare, including a NHSTA safety recall notice, we are still seeing the same EXACT failure. I don’t see this going away until the motor and the assembly lines in the factories are redesigned.
