Seems that’s something they (Temro) make. Trace it up to the block.

That routing could definitely be a block heater given the length of the Temro harness. Would definitely put eyeballs on it if block heater, just in case.

Nice find. If you want to go super careful keeping the inside of the frame rust-free maybe try Eastwood rust encapsulator. Come summer when you can get to a carwash, cram the wand into the frame openings, get yourself dirty humming a tune while the powerwash flushes the inside frame clean.

Then, get dirty again with Eastwood rattle cans. They come with a 12" extension and 360 degree spray head, you cram the spray head into each frame opening then draw it back. Great coverage but messy. It comes out of every nook and cranny. I still have Eastwood on my driveway after six Colorado winters.

Yup, yall were right. was able to trace it back to the lower part of the engine block a bit past the skid plate. Could see the orange harness at the end that sticks inside the block. These are obviously aftermarket only right? Not surprised since it's originally from MN. It doesn't ever really get close to below zero degrees here. Is it fine just leaving it in as it is?

Oh wow 6 years and still there? Interesting though, I'll have to look it up. I just found a local shop that does woolwax today, so I'm scheduled to bring in it in and have it done by the end of next week.

 

I have one of these and used it to look into areas that I could not see. It came in handy. I also use it for many other things.

You definitely have to put on some dirty work clothes and prepare to spend some time under the trucks you are considering. While not as important as the frame, also, look at the those rear drums for rust and look for rusty bolts that will be hell in the future if you need to remove them.

Update: Didn't see your post where you already found a truck. I used Woolwax and it was not hard to apply. If you found someone and their price is reasonable and they can get it up in the air, let them do it. Otherwise, it's not hard, just takes some time to make sure you apply it where needed.

 

Seeing this camera made me look at cheaper options that do not come with a screen. Looks like starting as low as $30 you can get cameras that use your device for the screen. How much do you find you use yours?

I read up on the rust encapsulator a while back and the way I understand it is that you really only need it if you're dealing with a mostly rusted surface. In OPs case the frame is brand new with 0 rust.

I'm not sure how much it matters but if you remove your front tow hooks you will most likely find there to be no paint at all (completely bare steel). You may want to remove those and paint that area with some black spray paint or similar.

I went around my new frame and found a few areas here and there (mostly small) where there was paint missing and shot some paint in those areas to try and keep rust down.

You can be as picky as you'd like. Even if you dont coat the frame I'm sure it would last 10 or 15 years as is but we're all about trying to keep these things going for as long as possible around here.

 

It was $105. You can record and take stills and it has a camera that can be rotated and it's has a 16' long cable. I wanted an all in one unit. I've used this to look inside my head cylinders, oil pan, frames and will be using it to look into my Moms heating duct (something is blocking flow). It's a cool little tool.

For $30 try it, it may be all you need and $30 won't kill you.

 

Its a bit expensive, but also on par with other places in the area. The others being Line-x or a place that uses Noxudol, so I'd rather just go with woolwax. They get it on a lift and power wash the undercarriage. Plus they do a yearly touch-up for $75 or so.

 

Good call--I'll have to take a look at that. I did notice in front of the radiator, where the bumper is attached, there is a piece that is rusted on the outer face. Can be seen in the pictures I posted earlier of the engine block heater cable. Not sure why that piece wasn't done but I can probably wire brush it down and spray it myself.

 

I assume you're talking about the part you can see through the lower bumper cutout. That's the bumper structure, they reuse that so it's untouched. Mine is the same way.

Yes, and ah ok. Its not too bad luckily, but it is pretty noticeable--enough to get me to clean it up for sure.

 

If you decide to do that you'll have to pull the outer chrome bumper to paint the whole thing. I've done a brief write up on it in my bumper mount light bar thread.

The 1st time will take more time and cost more and the touch ups will be on just the areas needed. If it's $75 for touch up let them do it but inspect your frame and make sure they hit the spots that need it.

 

Yeah I'm not mad at it--the first and most important thing I'm getting done to it. Also opted for Husky liners over weathertech and the FJ Cruiser windshield spray nozzles (both should be getting in today).

 

I think prep is the key for future rust prevention. The surface has to be clean, clean, clean before applying whatever, be it woolwax, Eastwood, Rustoleum.

Yeah, six years and Eastwood drips are still present on the driveway. Soaked into the concrete I guess. I tried to get my neighbor to do the dirty work spraying the Eastwood into the frame, he declined and had a good laugh watching me do it.

 

Interesting about the liners. I did not find a Husky custom set for my '06 DC. Husky only had a uni fit version so I went with Weathertech. I wanted Husky because they have those little pointy things on the bottom that make the liners stay in place on the carpet. The liners are worth their weight in gold. Get the front and rear. I've installed the Husky liners in my Sequoia and we even had Toyota include the liners in our daughters Corolla. No more carpet floor mats for me.

Also, once you get the undercoating don't be afraid to get salt on the truck. Drive the hell out of it and don't worry about it. Besides, we in the DMV don't get snow/salt like they do up north so it won't see too much of it.

 

The shop im going with pressure washes before, so should be good.

 

Watch them if you can that way you see the process and if you ever decide to do it in the future, it won't be foreign to you.

classic ones for 1st gen--at least for AC, also directly from Husky but I got mine from Amazon. Yeah I've liked using Husky from other vehicles I had. I wish they had weatherbeaters or the newer models for 1st gen. How are your weathertechs? Others from other threads here said they don't love them.

And thats good to know, I was wondering if light offroading would be fine with it also. Thankfully we finally got rain here today so hopefully all this salt will wash away.

 

I like the Weathertech. They are doing fine. I found some folks had issues with the driver side liner moving around but I don't think they installed that little black hook thingy that locks the liner to the carpet. I still would have liked to have the Husky liners though but they did not have the customize version. I did not want the universal fit liners. I don't want to have to cut, trim or none of that. I am tired of spending good money and have to do their job or the shi$@%$ don't last.
