New to me 2001 4x4 5spd V6

A couple reasons,
Its fun to go to the junk yard
I'm able to have the part right away
It's like-new
It's environmentally friendly
It's cheap
And if you look at what I got, it has all the brackets, bolts, attachments, all the stuff a new hose wouldn't come with. Those parts were rusted/missing from my truck which caused the hoses to be hanging unsupported causing the problem from occuring.

Like new how? At best it’s 19 years old now. And 24 years old if picked from your year model.

Solid metal parts like control arms, sway bars, braces, brake shields, bumpers etc. I could see finding some “like new” condition ones. Rubber parts? For these model years, they are all old as hell. Time for actually new bits for hoses and such.

 

I get what you're saying and you're probably right. But there's something sweet about getting it out of the junk yard and it working just fine that I find pleasure in. It will be fine, I'll clean it up and put some armor all in it

 

I'm with you on this one.

If the original lasted this long, and it would've lasted even longer had it not been for the corrosion and other issues, and the one you found is in great shape, hell yeah. I bet that OEM part runs just as long as many of the aftermarket versions, even with 15-20 years on it.

No way, really!!?? It's been 4 or 5 years since I've been there- but a family friend of mine lives just down the street from where that photo was taken. I'm pretty sure.

You're right, that's some beautiful country around there. Need to go back in my Tundra someday.

 

It's right in town when you come down off the tom boy trail. The tomboy trail takes you up the side of the mountain where I slept that night. It's was memorable for sure and worth the trip with the Tundra!

 

Yup, I know exactly where you're talking about. What a coincidence! Did you do Imogene pass? That's the one that connects to that trail, right?

 

Things got hairy on tomboy trail and dark started setting in so I was not able to make it all the way. I had to use the 4x4 to get as far as I did and with it getting dark I decided to camp and play it safe. Only spent the night in Telluride and then moved on. The trail was a bit advanced for a stock truck but the Tundra did very well regardless. Would like to return someday.

 

I'm about to pull the trigger on this recommendation from Shifty. Is there any reason why I should not?

 

What's the goal?

 

The truck bottoms out going over small bumps in the road even when unloaded. I want to have the topper on the truck and the suspension not squat lower in the rear than the front... The OEM rear leafs are way too soft and the back of the truck squats

 

I added the 5 leaf HD springs to mine and it still sags a bit in the back. It does better with a trailer than it did, but I could use another 1/2” or so of lift in the back to be level. I’d like to add RAS, but it’s $600. So I wait.

 

I agree with this also. I enjoy pulling my own parts plus you never know what else you will find.

If I could go back, I would keep my stock rear leafs and just add the RAS HD kit.

 

If I were you, I’d look into the regular duty leaf springs and recommend the toyotec or Deaver (same thing) or wheelers off-road add-a-leaf to add in. They are a 3 leaf progressive pack.
I had the stock leafs and the deaver AAL on my 2003 AC. It gave a little lift, handled extra weight of my topper plus sleeping platform and gear, and allows good suspension travel. I have the same setup on my 06 DC.

 

I seen a post about lights, light bars etc so I decided to share what I whipped out with some lights I had laying around. The lights are mounted to the ac condenser brackets and though they appear to be blocked, the light does shine well and does help when driving on dark roads. I have a switch in the cab I manually operate the lights. If the lights were rectangular in shape they would have shined through the slots in the grill better but I already had these lights so it is what it is now. I'm happy with them so I would recommend if you like the factory original look of the Tundra, this may be a good option for you.

 

The thing about the ATS HD (or any similar HD) is the lift. I'm debating this now myself. I think in the end I really do need the HD, but I'd prefer not to go HD. Sounds like you can expect ~1 1/2" of lift, which is a lot. Basically requires that you lift the front of the truck too, unless you want to look silly. Suddenly you've got a jacked up truck, just cause you needed stouter leaf springs.

I had the HD leaf springs in my Tacoma and I had no complaints about ride, offroad performance and load capacity. But I did end up having to put lift coils on the front to match the height of the back. Didn't want a lift, but ended up with one.

 

Im with you here... I don't want to deal with a rake on my truck. The RAS system is becoming more and more appealing

 

RAS will create some lift as well. But it’s adjustable and not that hard to install. So you can crank it up when needed and off when not.

 

I remember you pointing out the RAS system in another thread so I looked into it, hoping it would be the best of both worlds (heavier weight capacity, no lift), but from what I remember, it gives about the same amount of lift as the HD leaf springs.

Did your HD springs setting much after break-in? I'm leaning more and more toward HD springs and airbags (800+pound slide-in camper, after all), but I'm debating what front coils to get. Want to raise the front a bit, but as little as possible while not having ridiculous rake.

Far as I can tell, without going custom leaf pack ($$$), there are really no good options for the first gen Tundra to get a heavier-duty rear suspension without getting a lift as a side effect. It's funny cause I see people on the 2nd gen forum complaining that ATS HD springs didn't give them any lift

 

If I had a slide in, I would have airbags.

 

I gained about an inch in the rear. Have my cap on in both of these. 31.5” tall tires. Since then they haven’t settled much.

edit: take that back, I went up an inch in tire diameter, so they’ve settled about 1/2” or so.

Cool, thanks. Yeah, even the HD springs say something like "for an additional 500lbs capacity" or something. What I'm thinking...get HDs, get airbags, let the camper ride without using the airbags for a few days..? See if I can't get the lift to settle a bit. Then start using the airbags after that. Maybe avoid going with 2884s in the front, maybe 2883s instead.

Remember how much lift?

I'm sure I've just missed it, but I don't see a lot of AAL talk on here. There's people who went inexpensive HD packs, and people who went super expensive or custom packs. The talk I saw about one of the AAL products required removing the overload spring, which kinda defeats the purpose for me. Since my stock leafs are spent, I have to buy new ones anyway. So the options are, for someone who definitely hauls heavy weight (not just topper and gear), and wants as little lift as possible...:

-HD springs, and either Sumo Springs/Timbrens, or airbags. Will likely get 1 1/2" lift (far more than I'd like, but I'm willing to do it)
-New stock springs, and either Sumos Springs/Timbrens or airbags. No lift, unloaded performance no better than OEM (maybe a bit worse since travel is limited), but the support is there when needed.
-New stock springs + AAL.

The last option I know very little about, and whether it's actually the same thing as HD springs, in the end.

Now if your stock leafs are still good, the equation is different. But for someone who first and foremost needs new leaf springs, I haven't found a great rundown of all the different options and compromises associated with each.
