    Hello all

I’ve had a noise coming from my 2012 tundra for a while now it started off not as loud and would go off and on. It sounds like a knocking noise coming from the engine or from the pulley’s intentions.
It seems to have gotten a little louder and more annoying. My truck runs fine. I was just hoping someone has heard this noise before. I was wondering if it was possible that the tensioner for my timing chain is going bad
I tried to upload a video, but it wouldn’t let me. The noise doesn’t come on right away when I start my truck sometimes it can take a few minutes or just 30 seconds Thank you for any help you can offer. It is much appreciated

4.6 and 5.7 have timing chains, which the plastic guides/tensioners internally can get worn and the chain slaps/makes noise. These motors have a serpentine belt with one tensioner pulley and one fixed pulley, but those would make a noise any time the motor is on. The valves on these motors are loud stock and heavier weight oil can quiet them down, which may be the first thing to try, switching from 0-20 to 5-30 to see if that improves the noises, whereas could be something totally different if it comes on after the truck is on for a while (check your codes, put a bottle of seafoam through the gas, check the age of the spark plugs).

Yes you can run 5w30; has the timing chain ever been done? How many miles do you have? Why don’t you post a video of the noise? Checked oil level?

Alot of us have switched to 5w30. I just did on my last oil change and noticed a drastic difference in the noise from my valvetrain.

I’ve tried to upload a video.
my truck has about 200,000 miles and the chain is never been replaced.
I changed my oil like clockwork every time.
I will be replacing my spark plugs this week.

I just don’t really have a trustworthy technician to take it to anymore

Timing chains can last up to 300k+ (or less) so you just might be due… you can upload the video to YouTube and then send the link here
