1st Gen. Lunch Table - General Discussion

Is it just 3/8” or 1/2” I.d. Hose? Don’t have any calipers and want to get the right size. Thanks for the tip

 

This radiator is for our 2012 RAV4. I'm replacing all the cooling components except for the upper rad hose because it was replaced ~30k miles ago.

 

I think it's a lot easier to install. I think most of the reason they're hard to remove is rust- in most of the videos I've watched, all they needed was a bench vise.

 

Confirmed the battery is fine. Alternator failed. 161k miles.

I still can't believe my luck. I ordered a new alternator last week only for it to fail this week. The only reason I ordered a new one is because I have to remove it in order to reach the water pump.

My overzealous preventative maintenance regiment finally paid off.

Now go by a damn lottery ticket. Seriously. And if you win, I don't want much, just pay off my house, since there's not much left on the note. Or buy me a vintage GM whale, like a 60s or early 70s era Impala that's never been in the rust belt.

 

Guess I won't be installing this radiator. Broken nipple in shipping.

 

Supposedly the best Massachusetts has to offer and while it tastes great, it’s a little too fatty to me. “Rusty Cans” is the name of the back hole place off I-95.

No surprised there. Will they let you speak to a human at Rockauto or is the whole “ship you a new one, return the old in the box with a shipping label” an automated process?

 

I filled out the automated form online which was relatively easy. Now I must wait 1 business day. Not the end of the world as I still have to deal with the alternator and water pump. Working on the RAV4 is harder than our trucks. No space to reach anything. Lots of cussing. Currently trying to get the motor mount out.

I also realized I should replace the serp belt tensioner so I may run to Toyota and get raped on that part Monday.

That motor mount was fun. Either they changed the design or our friend Sue left out a critical step. There was a nut that required me to remove part of the sub frame and get it from below, on my back. Good stuff.



She also showed something i couldn't make sense of. She had bolts on her water pump pulley but i do not. It's all one piece. I'm about to start removing it now.

 

This Aisin replacement doesn't have a channel like the video. Should I just do a small bead of FIPG all the way around the flat surface? Inside or outside the bolt holes?

The old water pump had an actual gasket. Sue claims Toyota recommends FIPG. Hope she's right.

I’m guessing that’s Bawston-area A1Auto video lady. They probably have to edit down her videos a lot, I can imagine her regularly saying, “you might need a breaker bah for this (if you’re a pussy)”.

Damn, I’m not paying for shipping from them again……

 

I'd check EPC to see if a water pump gasket is listed for your vehicle.

In a pinch, I'd hit up the LAPS to get the Felpro version of the gasket. Just avoid Victor Reinz and the others.

Or Toyota may have it in stock as well. Not like I have beef with FIPG or anything, but I'd do what the EPC (or FSM) shows.

 

I don't have the FSM. No free version like our truck but I'll check again.
