Anyone else notice their HVAC controls are harder to turn in cold frigid weather? I wonder if it’s just the nature of the parts or aged OEM grease that’s making it so stiff?

I seem to remember them being stiff in the winter but never this stiff where I thought I was going to break the dial.

 

I've had Nest for so long now I don't even remember what it's like to touch a thermstat with your hands.

 

I noticed that this week when it was around 10 degrees here. I made sure to turn them slowly and carefully.

 

Oh wait, are you guys talking about in the truck? I didn't notice that yesterday, but only needed to tweak on the middle dial.

 

These are just basic transmission lines. Just grab a few feet or so from the parts store if you think you need them. I wouldn't really think there would be anything wrong with them though.

 

You might have water in the cable that goes to your heater valve in the engine bay. This happened on mine once or twice- a bit of water will get in the cable sheathing and then freeze, making the dial hard to turn. Once the truck warms up it melts, and I'll blow it out with compressed air and spray some lube in there.

 

Warm up didn’t change anything inside I’ve noticed but I was only driving for 1/2 hour.

 

It's the temp control dial that's stiff? Wonder if it just needs some lube.

 

Both temp and vent selector on the right. Fan speed has not changed.

 

Interesting. Haven't experienced it with my vent selector.

 

My vent selector has always had a very stubborn jump, I think it's when you go from head to head/feet? It's the 2nd or 3rd jump.

 

Mine is pretty loose during the warm weather. No issues there.

 

Planning and slowly accumulating parts for a front suspension rebuild this spring.

How hard is it to press out the old bushings? New LCAs are crazy expensive, even for non OEM ones, which I don’t want. I don’t have a shop press- but my mechanic would press new bushings for less than $50. SKP bushings are $30 on RockAuto.

I have time, not money. Anyone out new bushings in their OG control arms?

 

It’s really hard. Like hard enough most choose to burn them out with a torch and make Mother Earth cry.

I think a 20t press was the minimum. Mighve been 30t.

 

Burn em out and use Siberian bushings unless OEM is more cost effective now.

 

I thing you’ll find a YouTube video on someone doing it with Tacoma LCAs which are similar.

 

I really don’t want to burn them out if I don’t have to. I helped my buddy do it with his BMW- and I had to throw out my clothes it stunk so bad. Plus we got the fire department called on us it was so smoky.

 

Are there any good OEM LCA alternatives? Something that’ll last me 4 or 5 years, when I’m out of college and will have a bit more cash?

Needing OEM assembled LCAs sets the rebuild back a month and a half vs. new bushings.

 

Solo makes some. Get uniball & drive through salty winters without worry.

 

Sure sounds nice. Would double the cost of the whole project though.

Yup, been there, done that with a buddy's bimmer. Mentioned it on here at one point (or more). Not fun.

 

it aint my money. Go full LT. if done right, it would probably hold its resale value.
