Let's just say I don't want big brother spying on me.

    How to stop it?

Does anyone know of a dealership attaching a device to the OBDII to track the truck?

Some dealerships will add gps trackers so they can repo the vehicle when payment isn't made. I've never personally seen one installed but have spoken with repo men that say that's how they find cars so quickly.

The only way to stop it is to find the tracker that may have been installed, usually plugged into the OBD port. The often remove the OBD port and plug a tracker in then install a fake OBD in it's place. They will do something similar with a splitter so that the OBD port still works. Or they can just tap into an always hot wire or fuse anywhere in the truck.

If you are looking to stop the communication between the truck and Toyota...not going to happen.

You will need to buy a pre 2012 vehicle and also dispose of any current phone you may have and do one of two things:

    -go without
    -buy one of these phones

I highly doubt a Toyota dealership would care less as to whether or not you are making timely payments on your loan. The lender would have concerns there, but not a dealership (unless it is one of those small brokers that finance in house; typically found in the not so nice side of town). I would think that a Toyota dealership installing any type of tracking device without any sort of disclosure would be getting into some muddy waters legally.

Not everyone reads the fine print, all they need to do is put it in there, if you see it and question it then I'm sure they'll tell you whatever they want. It could also be written in the financing paperwork. As for why they would care is because dealerships make a profit from selling the financing to you. If you miss a payment or don't pay they don't make their commission. If they repo the vehicle it negatively effects the dealership with the finance companies. They don't want a car out there for months on end not being paid for that is losing value. They want it back as fast as possible for resale.

I have it on “good authority” that once the sale is completed (including all financing), that is the end of the dealership interest as to whether or not a borrower is fulfilling their financial obligation to the lending institution. The financial onus lies squarely on the shoulders of the lender, and whatever monetary disbursement to the dealership that the lender agrees to pay to the dealership is the whole responsibility of the lender, not the borrower. Dealership retains the holdback, whatever incentives from the lender and so on.

I can vouch that Toyota is not tracking your truck for payments. We missed a few back in the day and it took them forever to find it.
They are tracking your truck for other stuff, maybe you can remove the shark fin and as suggested don't use your phone anywhere near the truck but I think they can still track it anyway.

This is one of the very few ways I can think of. Get a vehicle prior to the implementation of all of the tracking tech that is now currently integrated into vehicles and also dump any mobile devices when in the vehicle.

    /rant on

Speaking of which, I think it was GM that recently was fined by the Feds for selling customer driving information to car insurance companies. If GM is doing it, I wouldn't be surprised if the other manufacturers are too and burying that information in the fine print no one ever really reads and just initials and moves on with when buying a vehicle. All of our driving info is some MBA's "great idea to increase revenue" away from being another commodity being sold without us knowing about it or knowingly consenting to.

Turn your center console into a faraday cage and put your phone in a smaller faraday cage at least 100yds prior to getting in the truck (the further the better) pull up the EWD for your year and yoink any/all gps/wifi/radio devices. Grab an old analog boombox to mash into the dash where the head unit used to be. Oh and last but not least don’t forget to buy musical artist M.I.A, best known for her hit song “Paper Planes”, new line of faraday garments:

You’ll probably be upset to learn that by default they can share your driving habits with insurance companies.

    Do dealerships really do this?

I can see one of those absolute garbage dealerships that promise if you have a job and $1000 you get a car doing this, but a new vehicle or upstanding dealer? What is their incentive to do this if they're not carrying the lien?

There are cases of it being done. With 0 legal trouble on the part of the dealer.

Here is one higher publicity example on a new Toyota from a Toyota dealer.

There was some sort of disclosure somewhere if it was from a “legitimate” dealership. Another trend in the last few years is adding LoJack as a DIO. A lot of people rush through contracts, disclosures etc while in finance because they are excited to drive off with their brand new vehicle. Then they later discover what they unknowingly agreed to (due to the buyer’s lack of attention to detail) and come on interweb forums to complain.

Guess I’m old school in that I really don’t want the manufacturer being able to download or upload anything to/from my vehicle. My opinion - a vehicle should be a standalone machine that can’t be manipulated by a computer across the world.

    Hey everyone,

1st I've never been late on a payment nor do I plan to be

2nd It was financed with Toyota financial since they had the better rate. Kind of makes me wonder if the Toyota dealership has to do what Toyota financing tells them to do.

3rd. The 5,000 mile inspection supposedly revealed a leaky front drivers strut. It took a total of 4 appointments to get it replaced.....makes me wonder if they used the excuse of 'a broken strut installing machine' to delay til they got their tracking device in....if there is indeed a device on my truck. Leaky struts make me somewhat nervous. Spray some oil and say the strut is leaking. .....old trick used by shady mechanics to extract money from people. In this case makes me think they used the trick to get my truck back in so they can install whatever.

    4. Say I want to go to a gun show and I don't want Toyota or the FBI tracking me. I know enough to leave my cell phone at home. However, I don't want AI or the FBI tracking me.

You really think they wanted you to come in... 4 times.. to... plug in an obd tracker? Close the laptop and grab some fresh air brother you are down a rabbit hole. Nobody cares that you are going to a gun show. I'd be a lot more concerned about my cell phone than my trucks location.

Wait till you learn about the data your smart tv is selling on you lol

The GPS trackers are often sold as a “theft deterrent” under various names in the sales addendums dealers are charging customers along with ceramic coat applied by a 2yr old in 5 minutes and window tint. Dealers have been installing these for a long time, to fleet track their cars, then they’ve been adding via the addendum they transfer the acct to you when you pick it up.

they are all the same device, but tracked by different apps. The dealer plugs it in and puts it behind the floor mat 7/10 times. Commonly sold under ZAZ GPS for $1195.

the guys saying the dealers are doing this for purposes of repos don’t know what they are talking about.

dealers close the deal after it’s funded, which takes about 48hrs depending on the lender. That said additionally, After you make the 3rd payment, the dealer is free and clear for their origination spiff from the bank. If you pay off your loan after 2 payments, they’ll lose their deal spiff, this is most lenders including TFS.

the dealers installing devices on their cars without the customers knowledge are buy here pay here shady dealers, those have an interest in quick repo since their in house financing it. Normally to Tier 5 customers, 400credit.

all that said, make sure you disable insure connect from the Toyota app like others have said. Otherwise the app sends telematics to Lexis nexis which your insurance company buys and uses against you.
