bought 2015 tundra couple weeks ago...now whenever I start it put it in drive soon as I get to 15mph I hear a obvious 'clunk' sound coming from the front-end area....took it back to the dealer, mechanic drove with me and he said it's normal..I asked why didn't it make the sound when I test drove it bought it and drove for 3000 miles...they say it's abs actuator and they already knew that it was going to do it at around 15mph....I know Toyota didn't make the truck to make this obvious sound..it's not normal...so I made them put it in writing and I left..I was going to tell them that I been a mechanic all my life, a service advisor and a service manager but I'm not that type of guy... need advice please

Just came from another dealer(for 2nd opinion) they said abs actuator self testing itself...ok I'm little bit more comfortable BUT that clunk sound is so obvious and uneasy...is everyone else Tundra doing the same?

I'm interested also, as I have the same sound. To me it feels like there's play in the drive shaft. I brought it back to dealership and had mechanic ride with me and he also said it was normal. He did not mention anything about abs actuator. I also had them note that. I'm interested to hear what our forum experts or anyone else who is experiencing this issue.

They told me it's a self test before it starts driving at higher speeds...all the magnets in thr abs activates at once to check the abs system..he also said there's just little rubber between the actuator and the body of the truck so we are going to hear it and feel the clunk...man it is annoying

Some must test more aggressive than others... No clunking on my '13. I don't see how that's "normal".

Well its good you documented it. Make sure to hold onto that paperwork. I would go see the service manager where you bought the truck and ask him to get it fixed. If he says he can't get it fixed, call Toyotas 800 number and have them open a case. What they will do is work with the service manager to get your truck fixed. If then the service department can't get it fixed, most likely they will send someone from their corp office to come take a look. The more cases opened on an ongoing problem, the more likely a fix will be created.

There's nothing normal if one truck is making it and another isn't.

I'm sorry I don't follow... you are calling it and "issue" yourself. Fact is - several members say they don't have it, and several say they do. This means the trucks are performing differently. Let's say that it's normal and that the ABS is checking itself or whatever - well in this case the people without the clunk have an ABS that is failing to perform the selfcheck. Brand new trucks should perform the same way in all respects and if they don't then that can mean only bad things.

I don't know man, 'common issue' means it is an issue...the abs actuator doing it's thing is fine..but doing it loud like this?, even if I turn thr radio up so I won't hear it I feel it in the pedal..like when the abs system goes active when your braking on a slippery surface if that ever happens to you in another vehicle that's exactly what it feels like on the gas pedal that vibration..I dunno..guess I'll live with it $47,000 invest goes clunk lol

Hmm I'll listen and feel for this tomorrow. Offhand I do not think this happens on my 2012.

I do have a noise/clunk after slowing down. Will be trying to catch on go pro soon and open a new thread.

Isn't that related to the TRD wheels that u were looking into?

Yep. But that was certain years,

Just did some searching and its funny what I found...

    NHTSA Item Number: 10025866

TOYOTA: REAR DRIVESHAFT/PROPELLER SHAFT CLUNK/THUNK NOISE. SOME OWNERS OF 4WD EQUIPPED 2007-2008 MODEL YEAR TUNDRA VEHICLES MAY EXPERIENCE A CLUNK/THUNK NOISE FROM THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE OR A BUMP-FROM BEHIND SENSATION JUST BEFORE OR WHEN ACCELERATING FROM A STOP. *PE

The only problem though is that the summary isnt real clear if this is just a 4wd problem or if it includes 2wd's. It does include 2wd"s
I know for a fact it is caused by a dry slip joint (under that rubber accordion boot). I have had my truck in for this several times. Once they kept if for 3 days and even put me in a rental because the "clunk" was so bad. It was awful. They claimed they couldn't find the problem and just gave it back saying "good luck". I even opened up a complaint with Toyota headquarters. Never even got a follow up call from those people. The dealer in the end claimed my 3/1 level kit threw the geometry off and that was the problem, so since I'd modified the truck it was my fault... Yeah, I know about Magnusson Moss, that went nowhere too.

Long story short, I took it to a friends shop (he works on Ferrari's and Lambo's). We dropped the drive shaft, pulled the boot back and that slip joint was completely dry. I'm talking so dry you couldn't get a spec of grease on your fingers by rubbing the splines anywhere! We greased the heck out of it with a lithium chassis grease and it hasn't made a peep in over 5000 miles but now it's just slightly starting to come back. I'll either grease it again or take it back with the printed TSB and ask for a new shaft. If I do that, I'll re-post and let you know how it goes.

2010 Tundra, Reg Cab, 4X4, TRD Off Road Package, SR5, Radiant Red, Black Interior w/Buckets & Console. DiamondBack HD/Line-X Tonneau Cover, Rhino Liner in the bed, tinted windows, TRUXX 3/1 Level kit. ( I actually removed the 1" blocks in the back, the truck is truly level without them and the drive shaft "clunk" went away as the axle wrap was diminished a LOT ).
