We are going cross country pulling an RV. I want to put on the best brakes since I will be going through mountains. I expect to put > 7000 miles in 2-3 months. Thanks

cryo treated rotors and your choice of good pads. Akebono performance pads do well, no dust, good bite and last a long time. Price is good too.

On Cyro rotors, smooth or slotted is good, Id avoid drilled unless you dont mind feeling the feedback from them when braking.

OEM are fine. Properly adjust the trailer brake controller and use Tow/haul and S4 mode and the manual shifter to downshift on steeper descents.

Then it'll be cryo treated front and rear rotors with some decent pads.

I've had good luck with these brakes:

    https://brakeperformance.com/brake-rotors/index.php

I would be looking for a premium rotor and a good quality towing pad. I would do a semi metallic pad.

The trailer brakes should be looked at as well. You can put larger brakes on most trailers. You can even upgrade to a 13" disc system for relatively under 1500.00. Most drum brake upgrade kits are under 700.00 or so. I put the biggest brakes on my trailers.

Like @KNABORES said, the OE brakes are quite good. Not Alcon-good, but not Alcon-priced either. I would go with OE over any parts store house brand l or unknown brand. I have lots of towing and hauling miles on them. They offer an upgraded TRD pad for a little more bite at the expense pad and rotor life, and more brake dust. I got 140k miles on my factory brakes, and another 60k or so on the next set of factory brakes.

There are certainly lots of options, just make sure to bed the pads and rotors properly.

I never had a problem with my tundra factory brakes.

Now I serviced the brakes every year as well:
    -Removed pad pins, cleaned
    -removed pads, inspected, cleaned
-used brake grease on back of pads and pins. Reinstalled.

I got 60k+ out of my OEMs. Can't complain about that on half ton running gear.

I had over 80k towing my 8000# TT occasionally with no issues. Still had pad life left when I sold the vehicle.

Was any of that heavy towing? That sir is impressive.

I am at 118400 miles on my 3500, but that is a whole different ball game in brakes. I'm still at 65%+ on the pads.

“Best” needs to be defined: Best stopping power?
    Best fade resistance?
    Best pedal feel?
    Best pad life?

Each of those characteristics presents a trade-off for another… for example a pad with ultimate stopping power probably is not going to have the best pad life… in fact it will likely be significantly shorter life with much brake dust.

A pad with the best fade resistance may not have the best feel, or stoping power.

and then there is cost… as price goes up there is diminishing returns in terms of performance.

Knabores offered a solid solution with the fact that the OEM braking system is probably close to an ideal compromise, with factory recommended methods of conserving brake performance.

ETA: fresh fluid will be an immediate improvement in fade performance over fluid that is more than a year or two old.

I highly doubt the “best” brakes are going to be available on Amazon.

I did tow a dual axle enclosed trailer for tools but that mostly got left at the job site. Also its trailer brakes were very dialed. I can add lots of S4 miles might be the biggest factor.

Ok, so I just realized I have S4. When do you use that gear? All the time while towing? only on steep grades? up or down?

Anything that will make the towing better im working that into my setup.. Brakes is a start then other stuff on the truck, have the guy coming next month to work on the RV. Peace of mind :)

Thanks for this new info !!!!

S4/s5 keep the converter locked which helps keeps the trans cool also.

I never had to worry about putting my 2012 Tundra in S mode. That truck was always in 2nd/3rd/4th best case scenario. Usually in 3rd.

Just go nuts. 6 piston brembo's FTW.

These have 6400 miles and look new.

Yes all of this and you don’t need to be towing necessarily. Trans temps down as said and keeps brakes cool on incline/decline or even in traffic.
