agreed, there are always more factors than anyone wants to capture to admit to either way.

it doesn't make for good "point making", lol.

I don't think in a vacuum that often, things are complicated..

I think we need more 5W30 and Volvo content.

I am not reading the post above but I used total 2022 and 2023 Tundra sales and not the recalled failures. I took failures as a percentage of total 22 & 23 Tundra sales.

Not in my state until recently teachers got a base pay raise jump, also Teacher incomes in my state were so low that they have a program to double match any retirement into a Teacher's retirement plan which is nice. I believe teachers deserve good salaries.

We's all that have owned many Toyotas realize that, and have observed that the Gen 3's are not holding their own, which is artificially inflating (even for Toyota) the strong prices of the 2nd Gen.

The used prices on 2nd gens have actually been going up and pretty much correspond with the beginnings of the issues with the Gen 3. Prices on the Gen 2/2.5 dipped a bit at introduction, when the waste gates started failing right out the gate, the drop stopped....since then the drop has all but stopped, and in some cases going up.

I have been watching the prices since the 3rd gen came out. I also kick myself for not picking up a used 2nd gen when the prices dipped a bit.

Same thing is going to happen with the 4 runner, and I hope to be able to exploit that.

In my area within 100 miles there are 190 2000-2021 Used Tundras for sale.
There are 205 2022-2024 Used Tundras for sale.

New or Used? In my observation of the market I haven't seen 3rd gen trucks holding resale as strong as previous generations. Even when you throw out the trucks people over paid for in 2022.

It is difficult to compare though, at first glance it looks like the 3rd gens are more expensive than the 2nds, if you dig into original purchase price, compare average mileage age etc. You start to see it.

That is what I have observed as well, the 3rd gen is shaping up to be the future used 1/2 ton truck bargain just like Fords and Rams have been for years. I guess every brand has to take a turn.

New units sold at higher sales prices.
The deadenders don’t like it but the Gen3 product management has been very strong.

That's good news, except for the owners of the replaced engines putting up with these issues. Our daughter had her Hyundai Santa Fe back to the dealer 5 or 6 times after her motor was replaced to fix niggling issues. Sure it's great for owners to get a new engine but it is a MAJOR PITA going to any dealer for service lately, when you can get in.

LOL, wut. I have proven that the actual number of failures are just a fraction of the total production.

If total production = 100 units and 99 units fail then that is still a fraction.

How nice of all non 3rd Gen owners to be so concerned about the engine failure rates and resale values of our trucks.

Seems to be around 3-5 grand worth of depreciation per year according to KBB, but I do see 2022s seem to not be holding value as well as the 2nd gens. This could be due to launch year and first year of a new model.

It’s really just Toyota Japan. They are increasingly moving away from diesel globally really driven by their corporate view on diesel’s effect on the environment.

Most of the U.S. truck engineers want diesel. Hell I think most of them want a 2500 diesel running on 35s.

Sadly, Japan wins even though the U.S. is their largest market.

It really has nothing to do with emissions. There is nothing in the 2027 emissions standards, the next round, that specifically targets diesels at all.

Remember it was just a few years ago cities around Europe were mandating diesel engine bans. California was heading in that direction before withdrawing a necessary waiver.

The view on diesel globally is pretty poor. It shouldn’t be that way. I bought one of the GM 3.0L diesels and I was easily getting high 20s in a full-size crew cab 4x4 truck. It was nice. I’m in an RHO right now hoping I get 11 mpg.

When all is said and done, the general public in the US loves to buy Tundras, Tacomas, Rav4s, Siennas, 4Runners. Tradesmen not so much, Tundra doesn't have payload, and Toyota doesn't offer a cargo van (shameful IMO).

All brands have failure points, Yota seems to have less. OK, carry on, I figured after 108 pages I should get my name in whether or not if it's helpful. And remember to donate to charity *Ahem, https://www.souldog.org/ needs all of the help they can get.

I'm not too concerned about resale value of my Gen 3, but I found this email from my dealership rather disappointing, today.

My truck is a non-hybrid, non-TRD 1794 with 20K miles on it. Purchased on 8/2/23. IIRC, I paid roughly $70K out the door, including a 10/year 125K extended warranty.

To really see depreciation you need to use the sticker price minus warranty. Basically the before tax number before warranty. But that is exactly the kind of depreciation I have been seeing on the 3rd gens. If that rate continues, they will be the bargain basement 1/2 ton on the used market for sure.
