I was doing the transmission drain and fill on my 2015 Tundra. I got distracted during the fluid check process and forgot to pin my cooler. I drained around 3.5 qts. Added 4 then got truck up to proper temp using the pin method on the ob2 plug. Drained out about 1/4 to 1/2 qt. When I realized I didn’t pin the cooler I then re checked by pinning it. The pan only dripped out fluid. Question is would there be a discrepancy on fluid level with or without pinnng? Would or should I add some more fluid then have it pinned to drain? Thanks.

Pinning insures it gets all of the fluid up to temp together. Not pinning leaves the fluid not circulating through the ATF cooler.

Should I add another say half qt then have it pinned and re check the fluid?

If you believe it could be underfilled, then yes.

Yes because when you pin the thermostat it allows the radiator to fill with transmission fluid that would normally be in the pan until the fluid reaches over 185°. The check temperature is much lower than that which is why you need to pin it or else you will end up draining out too much when you do the check process. I would add a half a quart and do the procedure again if nothing comes out, add another half. I'm not sure if what the capacity of the OEM cooler is.

Sounds good. I haven’t driven it since I did the drain so I’ll grab another qt tom and finish it the “proper” way. I would imagine there can be more than a 1/4 to 1/2 qt diff but I certainly don’t want to screw up this in the name of preventive maintenance.

Yeah it's probably around that amount, a 15 row Setrab is .4qts and I'm willing to bet the OEM cooler is less than that so nothing too crazy but like you said, might as well do it right.

This morning I added another 3/4 of a qt. Pinned the transmission cooler this time and drained just a little. So without pinning it would have been prob a 1/2 qt low.

Kind of nit picking here but technically it's the AC condenser that has an integrated transmission cooler within vs. the radiator. Used to be a standalone prior (and I think the changover was with the 14+ facelift).
