I gotta go to 105% and yank the tailgate back and forth. It worked fine before I gave my dad the truck...

I'll just add it to the list of things I fix or redo in spring. I need to replace the lower ball joints first thing. He had them done a year or so ago, but they used non-OEM parts. I also need to chase down a clunk that's happening. I'm probably do for shocks at some point too.

Do shifty's tailgate 2nd gen parts mod. Worked like a dream. Went from doing what you described to a 1 handed smooth operation.

That's the plan. I need to degrease and re-lube the latches too. My rods are all bent to hell as well so those need to be straightened.

You may be able to shorten the OEM rod (by putting a strategic bend somewhere it won't interfere with sliding) to make it engage the latch(es) faster. I've had to do similar swapping out parts into junkyard doors in the past.

Unless the latchese work on a push system, then you'd need to un-bend some part of the rods. You'll quickly know. Just play with it while the cover panel is off. You'll see pretty quick what the issue is, I'd hope.

Is your access panel caved in?
I had that problem too. Took a mallet to the panel to flatted it back out. Handle works flawlessly now.

What do you coastal guys do for rustproofing? Just moved to Houston recently, no snow but salt air. I was thinking of fluid filming the frame again, anywhere or anything else to do?

Tundra got a younger brother. Just picked up the work truck for my new job. It'll fit right in :D

Problem is, now I've got my Tundra, a recently acquired 99 Subaru as a bang-around-town vehicle, and now the work truck. Feels a bit excessive...but I'm going to roll it for a while and see what I think. Might ditch the Subaru but we'll see.

I'm not on the coast, but my preferred method especially if you work on your own vehicle is wire wheel, rust remover, rust reformer spray paint, and finish with VHT satin black paint. Lay the spray paints on with some moderate coats. There is absolutely nothing aside from powder coating the frame or a brand new frame that will look as nice. Does it work as well as the other stuff? No idea, but it's sure as hell not as greasy and I haven't noticed anything coming off or rust forming underneath the paint.

I’ve heard of people using WD-40 by the gallon to protect against surface rust. People do it a lot around here at least for their chrome wheels during the winter. I’ve used it on exposed metal with good results. It stinks though.

Are these the same people who wear the copper magnetic bands for healing power?

I haven’t tried one but some people swear by them including my ex-boss on a program before he retired.

2nd year/winter with the restored steelies, coated in WD when I mount them. So far no rust.

The wheel has inertia built up that includes over coming the weight of the truck. As soon as it's loose of that weight, the built up energy / inertia will make the wheel accelerate beyond the speed of the vehicle. Seen it time and time again.

How come we didn’t hear it fall off or the drum scraping the pavement? I would think that noise would be deafening at high speed.

My brother lost a wheel on his truck driving down the road and the truck just rolled on with three wheels until he almost came to a stop. 72 C10 long bed was pretty front heavy though. The wheel went rolling past him at high speed, rolled through a ditch, jumped the opposite ditch bank and cleared a fence into a field surrounded by trees. He never found the wheel.

I just watched it again. That's one bald ass tire. Half shaft came with it, so the wheel didn't fall off, the whole axle came out. Rear axle was sitting on the ground when he was at a complete stop.
