What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

That is the goal.

 

$6k in repairs, and that's for a bumper cover, a quarter panel, a headlight assy and a hood

But yeah, no fluids leaking, tires are good, no airbags going off, etc. Not sure how long it'll take the shop, guessing it's based on supply chain though they try to hit a 15 day TAT.

I'll put a minimum of 350 miles a week on the Tundra, probably good for it vs sitting at the house. I am reminded, while driving it, that I need to replace the 10yr old KO2's...

 

10 yrs old? No shit? Amazing. I'll bet they're hard as a rock.

 

That's the downside to not putting many miles on a vehicle. The KO2's I replaced yesterday only had around 38k miles but they were made in 2018 and incredibly loud.

 

I just sold a set of the original KO tires with more than 11/32 of tread in December for $150. The tires were on my truck that I purchased in August. They were still in good condition. The buyer told me he had just blown a couple tires and I assume he priced the new tires and figured these would be good for awhile.

When did the original KO tires come on the scene?

I have a feeling the alignment was off before I replaced my coils and shocks, since the truck has more lift and drove like crap before and after swapping them to 6112s and Freedom UCAs. But it's great now!

 

They rode good for so long but over the last couple of years, they just gave up. They ride rough and are extremely loud.
Before driving the truck ~350 miles a week, it was manageable. I wouldn't want to ride on them long term - makes me not want to drive it actually.

Been saving cash for something else but I may have to break down and get a set...

I'm 3/4 of the way through the install and I'm stuck with the upper and lower dash pulled out and snow on the way to a place that usually doesn't get snow. I've got the OEM head unit and amplifier extracted. I've swapped the OEM brackets over to the JVC head unit. I've also got the the adapter harnesses wired up and ready to go. I found a great way to mount the microphone by sliding it under the overhead console ledge. The kicker: I thought running the microphone wire would be simple, but it keeps falling out of the headliner and A-pillar. How do I keep that wire in place?

 

Push it in deeper I guess. Or use a coat hanger to fish it thru and pop out at the lip of the overhead lights/console

Honestly, I was impressed with Malibu, with only skeletons of houses remaining, you can see the ocean again. California needs to reclaim it and turn it into national park space. Nobody should own the beach.

First morning pics. TITS and MITS

 

The JVC head unit is 98% installed. I was able to pull the overhead console and route the mic cable through that opening and it appears to be staying in the headliner now. I did not have a T-30 bit to remove the A-pillar trim, so I still have work to do there.

If I can't get the A-pillar trim pulled and the wire properly routed, I do have the option of these little adhesive wire clips. They came with my dad's V1 radar detector for routing cords down that blacked out portion of the windshield edge. They will be a last resort.

Once the mic wire was at the base of the A-pillar, it was easy to push it through the gap between the pillar and the dash. I pulled the rocker panel and foot well trim so I could route the wire behind and under the dash. After that, I used a coat hangar to fish the wire over to where I could get a hand on it. (Don't tell @shifty`, but I didn't loom the mic wire; I just zip tied it to an existing loom. )

This unit also came with a USB plug at the end of a cable for directly connecting a smartphone for power and music streaming. I routed that cable down the radio hole and out the trim panel in the passenger foot well using a coat hangar.

Crutchfield suggested these Posi-twists when I bought the unit, so I added them to the cart. They definitely made all the harness connections feel solid.


There is a noticeable gap around the unit. IIRC the instructions said that the unit trim bezel would not be required, but I decided to try it anyway. However, the HVAC control trim would not fit when I added the bezel, so I took it out.


During the install, I accidentally broke the rear of the HVAC trim in two places. One of the lower snap-in posts broke off and part of the housing also broke. These are superficial wounds and I know it's 20+ year old plastic, but it just tics me off.

So, I've still got some work to do and some questions for Crutchfield. The JVC user interface is foreign and not intuitive for me, but I'm sure I'll get better with it. Sound quality was (subjectively) amazing. At the end of the install, I ended up with 2 extra trim screws. I racked my brain for what I could possibly have missed. Finally, I realized they were left over from removing the OEM amplifier.
