The 70s was best for rock. Toss up between the 70s, 80s and 90s for the best metal.

yesterday's music was authentic.

today's music is all(mostly) synth created. it's too perfect.

the human ear loves to hear the strategic imperfections of Jon Bonham or Phil Collins ACTUALLY playing the drums.

I try to listen to today's music...I do.

but it's mostly bubble gum shit.
and metal is just drum triggers and studio tricks and dudes hollering thru auto-tune.

SRV playing "Life without you" is pure magic.

EVH was way out there. my first concert seeing them was the 1984 tour at the Houston Summit. when they played "Drop Dead Legs" my brain froze....I never heard it before.

roy clark, earl scruggs, glenn cambel, larry carlton......the list goes on.

Only thing I will add to the conversation about music is a general sweeping comment that mainstream music today is generic, overproduced and all sounds like the same garbage. The musicians are less musicians and more just "performers". I actually find myself listening to more foreign music if I want to listen to a modern artist.

The only modern artists I can think of who are talented or doing anything interesting all got their starts in the 90s or earlier.

There was a lot of incredible talent in the 70s and it was cool to see hard rock really develop and bring in influences from jazz, blues, etc. One example I remember of a well put together guitar/melody is — I Want to Change the World by Ten Years After.

 

Which were in reference to the lyrics of Southern Man by Neil Young, which spoke out against systemic racism and inequality in 1970.

 

Yup. Knew that, but was stirring the pot.

 

They were good musicians (Neil Young, earlier mentioned, I don't think is, without CSN), but I think American Woman was described by Randy Bachman as different than a breakup song. On that same album, I like No Sugar Tonight better. I get that the U.S. has been viewed as a political bad guy by lots of folks in CA and other places; but a foreign someone else having an opinion on it, even if they're correct, makes me feel the same as a stranger calling my girlfriend ugly. Maybe, but fuck you anyway. Still, not gonna take their talent away from them - they're legit.
