I’m looking to get the family out camping now that it is getting a little cooler. There are a number of better known camp grounds here around Austin, but I was wondering if anybody knows of some good camping areas within an hour or two that are a little more off the beaten path.

    Thanks in advance.

Look up Lost Maples State Park. This is the best time of year since the maple trees turn fall colors.

Also look up Enchanted Rock. Second largest Natural Dome rock made of solid granite.

I thought of a few more things to check out. Not a camp place but a cool thing to do with the kids. In the summer in to Austin, TX go to Congress Avenue Bridge. The bridge has the worldest largest Urban bat colony with over 1.5 million bats! Very cool to see them fly out at night.

Look up Hidden Falls Adventure Park in Marble Falls, TX. They have camping, shooting ranges, swimming, fishing and endless amounts of off-road trails. They have everything from simple trials to extremely dangerous trials. The trails are marked based on the level of difficulty. There is a cafe in Marble Falls called Blue Bonnet Cafe that has the best home made food and pies.

I hope that helps you with ideas.

I was going to say the same thing! Love Lost Maples! Everything from RV sites to primitive, Good water, great trail loops, beautiful scenery this time of year. further than a hour from Austin, but worth the trip.
