General Supercharger Thread

Maybe it's like saying you do sprints when really you go jogging and sometimes sprint. If you go up against someone that actually sprints you get railed, but you both are into running, you just run a lot slower

 

Blue line is a smoothed out boost reading like you would see on the gauge, yellow line is the raw data from the prolink, which refreshes 12x a second or something like that. Just to illustrate how much it jumps around

What supercharger are you running? What size pulley? And what elevation?

The 7000’ explains why the numbers are so low but you’d think it would raise as rpm climb.

Boost should move with RPM, so that might explain the spikes if they line up with RPM

 

The supercharger spins a fixed amount relative to the crank (crank pulley divided by supercharger pulley). Even at higher rpm the ratio is the same, so the airflow is roughly the same. The difference in pressure at varying rpms is a byproduct of efficiency changes from the aerodynamics as the rotor speed changes.

 

I bet that would be a lot of fun until I went down to Phoenix and blew the transmission to pieces

Well unfortunately I bumped Silver out of the #3 spot today haha!

First run with new transmission. Was 10.3psi. Flat farm road. Had on 35” studded tires which likely didn’t help lol.

When I installed my SC, I was under the impression that boost increased with RPM, but looking at my boost curve, it was essentially flat. I was perplexed and asked around, including asking Whipple if that was an issue. But after a few exchanges, I was made to understand that positive displacement blowers operate as @snivilous explains - a fixed amount of air is captured with each rotation of the supercharger so it becomes a fixed ratio between crank and blower. Changing a pulley changes that ratio and creates more boost, but a good flowing engine should see roughly the same boost throughout the RPM range with a PD blower. I assume…

Looking at changes folks have made to intakes, exhausts, and tunes, I’m left to surmise three things about boost:

- a good flowing exhaust and intake will enable a flat boost curve;

- a poor flowing (I.e. - inadequately sized or restrictive) exhaust will increase boost pressure with RPM simply as a measure of restriction pressure and not power potential;

- a poor flowing intake will decrease boost with RPM as you run out of air, causing that fixed ratio to droop at the top end.

Concerning tuning, I suppose there are several things that could affect boost fluctuations, but I think two of the most significant things would be VVT adjustment and timing. Having valves open too early/late/long would cause disruption in flow, poor exhaust pulse timing, etc. More timing typically makes more power until it doesn’t; flirting with that line should yield optimal power which should equate to optimal flow.

These are suppositions. I am happy to be wrong, but it’s what makes sense to me. Curious to know if I am misunderstanding things.

I'd ask you if you had more than one, but I'm currently running very close to the 5V/512grams MAF max with the TurboKits MAF. Then I'd have to open up the intake, then I'd have to go belt hunting to find the right length scratching the shit outta my forearms again and having everyone looking at me like I'm self-harming.

 

Ever have one of those days? So I'm taking a few thousandth off the pinion on the front diff. I pulled the rag that had my top pinion bearing which goes flying hits the corner of my engine puller and I hear bearings bouncing on the garage floor. Guess I'm delayed a day or 2 until new bearing shows from down south...

 

I hit it at 5600. I just blindly dump fuel at it.

Yes sir! The account setup was pretty quick and you pick what times to share. Tested my 4runner out and it got this amazing result haha (wild to think this is double the time of a Tundra and still faster than my first Mustang).

 

I have a whole box of 2650 pullies, everyone bought the ones I had so I ordered more and no one ever ordered any more after that

 

Oh, okay. So my rationalization for buying one is "only" to see if I can get away with the same belt that I'm using for the 70mm.
