Get yourself an OTT tune and have a reputable tuner do it for you. Really makes the 5.7 feel less lethargic and more smooth.

    Too many, but not enough....
I recently contacted them on this question too and it seems legit but it was pretty pricy at around 500 bucks.

If there was a mileage increase even 1 mpg it would help me justify it to myself lol

I know when I got a tune my MPG stayed the same. However I was just going off the dash, I never did a proper calculation by hand

I tuned my truck a couple weeks into ownership. I opted to get the HPTuner dongle and flash my truck myself.

100% would do it again. Helped smooth out the truck and powerband feels more useable. To me $500 aint much to tune a vehicle coming from German brands that is well over 1k+

Other concern I guess is smog testing in a couple years. I don't imagine it would matter but I should ask to see to be sure.

A tune will fail smog in CA unless it’s registered with CARB. You’ll have to reflash back to stock before the smog test.

You've done it? I wonder how similar smog tests are in Oregon vs California

Do you know for sure? Just wondering if it's first hand experience because there are conflicting opinions already lol

I know people who’ve failed because of a tune, but I convert back to stock before smog when possible so I have not personally failed because of it. It’s hard to believe than CA has all the tunes for every car being smogged today, but I don’t want to test it to find out.

What do you mean by smog test? Is that like the e test(emissions test) we use to call it in Ontario years ago?? We no longer have that here in Ontario

Yes, emissions test. We call it a smog test to scare people into keeping their cars boring and stock at the fear of increasing the smog / haze over Los Angeles and San Francisco.

The guy emailed me and said the OTT tunes are smog friendly and they haven't had a failure yet. If he says they will revert it back and forth for free if there is a failure I'd prolly consider it again.

Having tuned with HP tuners myself and taking mine to Toyota alot, I don’t believe there is a way to even tell you have a tune from a systematic point of view. I can’t even see what the current truck tune is. I would heavily doubt CA facilities can tell anything is different.

Back in the day WA made some years of cars actually run their engines and checked the exhaust output physically which would detect if you deleted cats or similar, doubtful an otherwise stock truck that is “tuned” would even fail that test since barely anything is different.

OTT tunes on rigs in Cali no issues. And yes mine passed with a tune here in Oregon

    This.

    And this.

    And this.

    And this.

My experience with OTT has been the same on my N/A Sequoia - the 5.7 feels much less lackadaisical without being jumpy or taxed or worked up. It's smooth, powerful, and enjoyable to drive.

We don't do emissions testing where I am, so I can't speak to that other than some personal conversations with OTT about the CARB certification process they had to go through.

    Is it worth it? ABSOLUTELY.

Thank you, little nervous someone coming to plug into my OB 2 and programming my truck but it’s a legit site and I don’t see really any bad reviews. They mostly tune Tacoma's but tundras are the next highest volume vehicle they do, i also liked the fact I called the number and someone picked up the phone and spoke with me directly.

According to Viktor G, there is no way for Toyota to tell if you’ve tuned since the ECM is write-only. Can’t read the tune. Can only write it.

I have HP Tuner and it made a substantial improvement. Zero ragerts.

I also recommend the OTT tune. They have various levels of tunes based upon your driving style. A little pricey but smooths things out quite a bit. No more gear hunting, increases throttle response to your liking and keeps the torque where you need it. Also it improves tow/haul mode as well.

Whatever this forum told me to do
    From the position of ignorance:

    Semi-specifically , what gets “tuned”

    the transmission?

    the AFR?

    The pedal position mapping?

    I gots to know.
