I have a small chip in my windshield I want to fix before it gets worse. I have heard mixed things about Safelite, although my previous experience with them has been overall positive.

    Any suggestions?

    TIA

It took you longer to go home any type this than just getting the chip glued up. Its not rocket science

Yea just order a kit on Amazon and read the instructions or follow a youtube video. It’s super simple to fix yourself and will cost like 10 bucks

I keep a kit in every car and use about 2 a year on average (for 3 cars). Haven’t had one fail yet.

My fix wasn’t as good as others Ive had on other vehicles. My guy said there’s more layers of glass in this shield and often the glue won’t go down into all the layers. A few spider cracks still visible down deep. Been 18 mos and no spreading. Luckily in the bottom left corner.

Check with your insurance company. Mine offers free chip repair coverage and has zero affect on rates when you make a claim.

This is the stuff. I've used it several times. Our 4R glass is crap, so I keep it on hand as well.

This... I have used this stuff on windshield chips on two vehicles and it works great.

This is a timely thread. I just got a small crack recently. I ordered the recommended Permatex product.

    Thanks

One possible issue is that I am not sure how low a temperature you can apply this. Be sure to read the label. It needs UV light to cure which for most of us means out in the sun. It might be better to do it in a warm garage and cure it with a UV light if you have one.

    Thanks, Raylo

I'm a fly fisherman and I tie my own flys. I often use a glue that requires a UV light to activate it. So, I should be set to do this repair in my heated garage.

this^. Most policies have this and you can just get a new windshield no impact to your premiums

Just one question. My crack is almost dead centered in my windshield, which is a long reach even with a small step ladder.

I doubt the hood will withstand any weight on it. Any suggestions?

Insurance companies won't replace a windshield if it only needs minor chip repair. Geico offers free chip repair for example. Windshield replacement is a different thing altogether. Depends on coverage limits and deductible by the insurer.

I do have windshield replacement coverage, but as stated, I doubt they will give me a brand new OEM windshield for just a small crack.

The other issue is I live in the boonies, and it's been difficult to get a mobile service out here in the past.

For $14 and a few minutes of my time, I'd rather just fix it myself.

LOL. If I can't reach it, I think I can rig up a scaffold with a couple of ladders and a 2"x12" plank to get the job done.

Prolly be easiest to just remove the windshield, set it on the garage floor and then squirt Gorilla brand CA all n and around the chip. Make sure to get it in there real nice and deep like. Also be sure to smear it about 3” around the chip. Then you could just have Safelite go to your house and re-install the repaired windshield!! Eezy peezy!!

Word of warning about taking it to just any glass shop. My wife just got a small chip (bullseye with short legs). Arranged with insurance company to fix but I didn't like the reviews and took it to another shop with excellent reviews. The technician took it in, completed the repair and brought the car back out. The legs were still there and so was a small divot/hole which I could feel with my finger. He said it was the best he could do with it but it didn't really look like it was done properly after reviewing some professional fixes on YouTube. Contemplating my next step. Maybe don't trust all reviews.

I just went through this! I ended up with a hole on the driver's side edge with two cracks that were growing so I opted for an entire replacement, which was free with my vehicle insurance!!

I have free chip repair and can use anyone I want. Original question was inquiring about Safelite and thoughts about other companies. I will have it done professionally and it will be free on my insurance.

Safelite is so-so. I used them on my Tacoma, not the best install.

Depending on what model you have, make sure they use an acoustic replacement if that's what you have.
