dealer offered me 24k on my tundra. 2016 limited crewmax with 125k on the clock. Truck has every option. Just had bed rust professionally repaired. No frame rust. Thinking I could get 27k private party. Thoughts? Located outside of Philly. Thanks

I’m thinking it might be tough to find someone who would shell out nearly $30k on a truck with that high of mileage and rust issues. Just my opinion.

Maybe. Rust belt is tough on 2/2.5 gen's. If you were in the south or out west 27k easily. I think 24k is decent and if your state allows you to deduct the value of your old vehicle off of the sales tax you pay on a new-to-you vehicle bought from the same dealership then trading it in would be worth it to not have to fuss with FB marketplace/craigslist idiots. I've been in the market for awhile for a 2.5 gen and there are quite a few out east in the rust belt. None I'd be excited about buying unless it had documents/receipts for rust-proofing the bed and or frame on a regular basis.

If I was you I'd take the 24k.

I'd ask myself this question. Does $3k matter so much that it's worth the hassle and time of waiting and haggling with a private buyer? Would you be advertising it for $27k, because if so, it's likely not going to fetch asking price anyhow.

24 is fair, if your maintenance is caught up (and you can prove it) you could probably squeeze them for another grand.

Especially if you’re in a state that you don’t pay taxes on the trade in difference, here that’s $2400 for 24k trade in. Assuming you’re trading in for something else.

In my experience people don’t have more than about 10-15k cash to buy something, so 27k you’re in finance territory for someone, thus you get involved with a third party to get your money/etc. and it can be a pain to deal with.

Thanks for the replies. I won’t be getting another car, just selling it to the dealer. I have other cars and a work vehicle. I think I’ll pay the dealership a visit this week.

Ask for more. Why not? Then try to have them meet you in the middle. Time is money. Make it worth your time if you’re serious about selling.

What do the books list the value as?

And yes, if that is their first offer, the make counter offer.

I swear, the skill of haggling seems to have been lost.

In this case if it's not for trade value go private and see what you can fetch. Start at the top tier of what Kelly blue book says it's worth. You can also fill this out and shop other offers.

Save yourself time and just shop South East. I live in North Carolina and I couldn't find a decent one north of Virginia. I ended up finding one that a guy traded in, think it was the south west side of NC, a 2020 TRD OR with 90k miles for 30k out the door, zero rust. Looked like it was purely used on the highway.

Best advise is to look at Toyota dealerships and see how they are pricing similar used Tundras, and go from there.

I'd be concerned about flood vehicles but maybe that's just my ignorance about hurricanes and such?

Good way to test market price is get a quote from Carmax. In most cases, it takes just a few minutes on their website or app.

Dealer probably isn’t going to tread near private party values because that is the near the floor of their pricing. Dealers are typically looking to net $3-6k margin per unit on used cars.
