2007 Tundra Steering Rack Delivery - Ok to Install?

    Hey all,

    Looking to y'all about whether this steering rack that was shipped by Olathe Toyota is usable? As soon as I opened the box (which had holes and was ripped), I saw the oil stains.     Probably precharged with a bit of oil. I'd read up in the service manual as to whether you want to fill it prior to install.
    That's basically same as power steering box and when they get overhauled you want to make sure there isn't air in it.
    I have no experience with steering rack, but worth a look.
    But to get back to the rack, I don't think it's a problem if it's got a bit of oil leaking around. Cycle it by hand and see
    how it feels. Think about how abused that thing gets, it's hard to imagine it getting damaged in a box in shipping.

    No need to pre fill it. Bleeding them is very easy. Jack front, start engine, turn wheel lock to lock 20 times. Be surely to add fluid after the first lock to lock.

    Thanks for the quick assist @lr172 and @Cruiserpilot ! I got a response from Olathe Toyota (below), I think I'll check it by hand like you advised and bleed the right way; if anything happens, I have a 1 year warranty. Will let you know how it goes!

    Sorry gave you bad info. Memory is not what it used to be. You go lock to lock with the engine off. Wont hurt to do it with engine on, but not standard.

    Good luck with that, there is a couple of really good threads on that here. Make another when you do it. One thing I remember is
    make sure to anti-seize the bushings when you bolt it in. Looks like cast aluminum alloy, so unless I'm told otherwise I'd use
    a marine (non-metal) anti-seize

    Thanks, will definitely let you know how it goes. I also bought some Energy Suspension polyurethane bushings (saw it in one of the threads you're probably talking about) and will absolutely throw some anti-seize on there. I might start another thread on my 2nd Gen Tundra build since I didn't know that was a thing until I started poking around the forums!
