We had a full house for Christmas celebration lunch.

Nieces and nephews are all growd up.

My observation and subsequent question to the group:

Why are some folks unsettled? anxious? etc.
and, some folks are focused and relaxed.

    age, not being a factor.

    I'll go 1st.
some of the kids are put together (parenting).....others are clearly a result of social media bullshit.

and, I am now seeing it manifest itself in a few of our relatives.

God Bless each one...Life is tough.

I'm guessing it's a 50/50 split of upbringing (parenting) and genetics...

If we look at a litter of pups (even from the most driven and stable of sires and dams) out of a litter of 5 pups only 1 or 2 will be top notch; 2, 3 or 4 will be good (possibly sliding to fair) and 1 or 2 will generally be deficient....

I'm referring to the passing (and receipt) of strong genetic based drive and character traits coupled w/a strong and stable nerve base to handle that drive. (IE>> This has nothing to do w/conformation qualities, AKC standards, or the ability for the pup to be an awesome pet/best friend/companion for someone... I'm talking purely about workability and trainability!

From that perspective, I'd imagine humans are the same... Even from the same parents, some are going to be top notch and highly driven and some will have anxious/nervous traits and be less motivated to lead, push and excel. Really nothing to do with their quality of life or the quality of human they are; simply a matter of their personal drive and character trait make up.

If you judge everyone against a narrow bench mark, then less appear to meet standards, excel or be successful. However, if you look for the qualities of the individual (whether that be a dog, a human, etc.) and then seek to indentify their strengths and what drives/guides them in life, then you will see things more from their perspective and possibly understand how to elevate them and how to 'measure' them against different bench marks.

I believe those less driven to lead and more driven to follow will generally be more 'influced' by outside stimulus including peer pressure, social media, hype and trends. Leaders or highly focused individuals will generally have a path they want to carve out for their lives and will absorb less external stimulus and influence because they are channeling their drive and energy on achieving their goals.

I can't argue with you on the dog front, but people are far more complex and capable of changing behaviors to a far greater degree than a dog. So much so that I would say that genetics may predispose a person to a tendency, but that can be overcome through upbringing and/or willpower of the individual.

    Willpower is genetics....

It's categorized as a character trait

it's better know as "resiliency" or the capability to withstand or capability to recover from an adverse experience / mental toughness...

This character trait is also reconized in dogs ;)

Sounds like a whole lot of avoiding personal responsibility so that nothing is your fault, to me. "I'm an addict because of genetics. It's not because I chose to pick up (insert addiction) and use it, it's because of my genes!" or "I'm not fat. I'm big boned. It's in my genes." Fuck all that. We are all where we are because of choices we've made along the way. Period. If you're powerless over your choices then you are powerless to change your situation. It's pure victim mindset horse puckey.

Whatever this forum told me to do
    agree

peer pressure is a genuine part of all this

As said earlier, it’s how you absorb it all

and social media is an awesome catalyst for influencing negative character traits

Agreed. Even if a human has a trait that predisposes them to anything (we'll call it X) they can over come it through training. As an example, I was a pretty unmotivated child and teen who was raised by a single mom without a father figure in my life. My own father deserted us. After boot my resiliency and motivation had changed dramatically. I high a higher degree of self respect and a higher level of integrity. A leader isn't born a leader. It's a skill they hone.

I have to remind my wife that the things her friends post on Facebook - or even what they text her - are not representative of their real lives.

Our Christmas felt less chaotic to us this year. It obviously wasn't but we've learned to accept it and lowered our expectations.

We didnt plan on doing any gifts this year. Longer story, so the short is we spent enough at the local hospital and setting up the new house...

So, we simply wrapped empty boxes for pictures of our newborn. I didnt even think about it and when we sent some out to the family and close friends it was immediately "holy shit is that all for your son?"

It was a good reminder of your comment.
