Just finished first oil change on the 18 Tundra I purchased. Bought it with about 100k miles and just did the oil at 107k. pulled the filter out and it was twisted up. Anyone seen this before?
First post here, sorry if this isn’t the correct location.

Definitely not a filter from Toyota, at least none of the ones I've bought have looked like that. I could see it twisting if the filter was too long (it looks like it compressed a little too) and when the cap was threaded on that rubber on the top gripped while the cap was tightened.

That looks like the wrong filter was installed during the last oil change. The OEM filter should look like this. It does not have caps on each end.

Was there a metal tube in the housing going through the filter when you pulled it out?

Wow lots of quick responses! Amazing. Thank you.
Certainly not OEM. I installed OEM but the one I pulled out could have been wrong size for the truck? It was difficult to pull out, but it always is. Also, o-rings were red and blue… dead give away that it’s not oem. Don’t love that considering I just bought the truck but the right parts are installed now.

Yes. This part was still original. Didn’t appear anything was wrong there.

yea aftermarket oil filter like others stated. nothing wrong with running aftermarket oil filters imo, lots of good options out there.
looks exactly like the FRAM filters, which personally I stay away from.

from posts I've seen of guys having that twist issue on FB groups either they were missing the metal tube in the middle of the housing
    upload_2024-12-26_19-58-33.png

or their oil filter housing had a shorter tube for some reason, like the one on this housing

thanks for the info! Everything looked fine and I’m 99% certain that tube was the correct length. After I installed the new filter I actually backed it back out because the last couple of turns felt odd and I wanted to make sure the o-ring didn’t fold over. When I pulled it back out everything looked fine so hopefully I don’t have the same issue.

If the metal tube is shorter it is because someone switched to a metal cap and did not swap the tube.

Walmart sells OE Oil filters. With collapsing filters, seems to be a lot of aftermarket ones collapsing, you're better off going OE. Idk about you but I wouldn't want one to collapse or fall apart and block oil passages.
