Does anyone ever hear a misfire or backfire whe you first start there truck? It only happens occasionally. And is very low noise. 2018 tundra 5.7 I force it doesn’t happen all they time only maybe a half dozen times since new.

Mine sounds like a 2-step when it’s a cold start in the morning.

How do the spark plugs look? Last changed? Have you tried swapping the coils to see if it follows for the misfire codes to the cylinder?

When my truck was 2 months old I experienced a Cylinder 3 misfire when starting, interesting was in cold weather. Caused the dash to light up like a Christmas tree. Toyota could never diagnose the cause, sent case to Toyota, never happened again. Fast forward three years and 35,000 miles without incident. Just had anther cylinder 3 misfire, not at start-up, but it was cold. This time I felt it while driving before any codes popped. It happened on a family road trip and truck ended up in limp mode. Again no indication of cause. Swapped coil on cylinder 1 and cylinder 3, could not reproduce in the short term. I asked about the spark plug and told it looked ok. Service Manger replaced the coil from cylinder 3. Back on the road without incident so far, been one month. I have to give huge shout out to the team at Jim Hudson Toyota in Sumpter, SC. They did everything they could to get us back on the road. My truck was at 37,000 miles and was two months out of warranty. He covered all under warranty. I hope it was the coil and nothing pops up again since the true root cause is still unknown. Merry Christmas to all.....the kids are waking up....gotta go.

Jim Hudson recently purchased that dealership from Scott Will. Hopefully he’ll start allowing people to order parts online and have them sent there to avoid paying for shipping. That was my biggest gripe with prior owner.

Also sometimes the plug tube seals on the valve cover leak oil. Allowing oil to pool at the plug.

Well as I suspected the issue with cylinder 3 misfire was not fixed and back. Four months later cylinder 3 just misfired again. Dealer is telling me coil is bad. Has anyone experienced multiple coil failures on the same cylinder? I'm looking for a know underlying issue causing the coil to fail. I don't believe it's a coil problem. There has to be a voltage, fuel, heat, plug, intake gasket etc issue. Fourth instance and second coil since 1500 miles. I told them the truck is not leaving until a true root cause is found as I don't have faith I won't be stranded randomly again. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Also is there a dealership with a capable tech or should I go third party independent for trouble shooting?

Only take it to the dealer
You can’t use after market parts on a Toyota . It’s possible they got a bad coil. Is it a new truck?
