Most dealers don't have the above ground hoist to do a cab off engine swap. With the can on the transmission has to be pulled first than the front bumper & the radiator. The cab comes off in 1-1.5hrs.

How did that tech in the video get the engine out without removing the cab or transmission?

It is in the instructions Toyota sent out.
Hood off, disconnect what needs to be removed as shown in video on the table.
Pull motor up and out, drop new one in. Re-install ancillary items that were on the table and floor.

I know. My question is in response to Turtle's post that the transmission has to be removed first if the cab is left on.

This is how engines were removed for decades before. You unbolt the engine from the trans from below the truck. Engine hoist lifts the engine up and tilts at an angle to clear everything on its way out. Some engine transmission combos would come out together and still clear. It’s been many years since I’ve pulled an engine but this is the basic concept.

    Again, I know that.

I am questioning Turtle's post that the transmission has to be removed first if the cab is left on.

See his statement here: "With the cab on, the transmission has to be pulled first than the front bumper & the radiator."

I'm asking him how the tech in the video did it if the transmission and cab both are still in place.

The tech in the video would have unbolted the transmission from the back of the engine from under the truck. The transmission stays in place. I have no idea what the other poster is saying, but that’s how it’s done.
I can only assume when turtle says removed he means unbolted from the engine.

I was pretty impressed until he said he was making the Tacoma engine "brand new" then all credibility was out the window.

I've personally done a few engine swaps and, frankly, what the tech showed in that video is pretty standard procedure.

I'd have no problem letting that young man replace the engine in my Tundra, if necessary. I can tell by the way he organized all the parts that he takes pride in his work.

Thanks for posting the video, Northern.

Call me old fashioned if you want but I do know the meaning of the word literally. Guess it comes from a technical background where words have meanings and used according.

if we were all to judge someone’s credibility by one line, I fear you wouldn’t have anyone left to perform the work you need in life.

I understand he was taking about the Tacoma. I thought I mentioned that.

That’s my understanding as well. If I had to guess, the ones not using it are the ones that received the defective hoists that had to be recalled.

Thats the problem, though it is a crap shoot. I went to the dealer for a simple oil change. The tech doing the work ripped the battery cover off my hybrid battery pack location and broke 3 retaining clips in the process. I was PISSED, only way I spotted it was that I happened to have the rear seats up in the back and the cover was flopped up. The dealership stood behind it but probably wouldn't had it taken me a month or two to spot it. I thought they would have to replace the whole box, but it is just the lid. They probably will have to remove the seats as well to get to it. I paid 75ish K for this truck in early 2023. So, I was not pleased in the least. Once they fix it, I am inclined to drive to another dealer and have them service it from now on out. You have to be careful; some are going to do a great job and some will not.

I would figure this would be a job for the tenured Master tech or above.

I’ve had so many issues with my local dealer I do most maintenance myself. Also the oil change boy isn’t a technician. They 100% wouldn’t be replacing your engine.

I saw Northern's video after I said that. Toyota recommends in their video to remove the transmission. I didn't know the trans could stay based on what Toyota was telling us, but we pull the cab & can leave the trans in place.

How fun are torque converter bolts to get out & back in? Even with the cab off they aren't fun.

Yeeesh. I went to my dealer for the 20k service and they torqued the Scheiße out of the skid plate bolts. I had to go back to them to remove the bolts when I tried to change the oil myself

Talked with the dealer today about my 23. I'm not in the current phase and they can't order an engine until my vin is up for the active recall. They also stated it would take 8-10 days once ordered to get the engine in, and 1-2 days to complete the swap. Also to note they said they don't offer a loaner which I thought was odd.

Toyota will cover a rental….however Toyota is only paying 3 days worth, so the dealer picks up the tab on the rest

The recall says that the loaner and the rental are two different things. The recall states that transportation will be provided to any owner who isn’t comfortable driving the vehicle during the recall waiting period for the remedy. Then the loaner during the repair is actually a separate part of the recall.

This is what was in the remedy notice. It's in one of the NHTSA links posted earlier in this thread.

I chatted with my service advisor a few days ago. They have done 3 recalled engines so far and are only using the engine hoist right now. They are still trying to figure out which techs will be doing it going forward. He said there is something like 52-54 bolts in total that need to be touched, but it’s better than just the short blocks.
