Didn’t someone start a thread awhile back for 3rd gen guys who were unable to manage their emotions about the recall? I swear there’s an available safe space around here….

respectuflly, I don't think its ever going to be to your satisfaction, its never going to be 0 and guaranteed 0.

there will always be "that one guy that has a 2025 that has failed, "I think" it was a bearing"

What's wrong with the trucks you have, or just want a new one, just curious?

or are you just window shopping and talking hypothetically, which is fine.

5/60 from the installation date and mileage of the new long block should be a minimum.
5/100 says to potential 3rd genners (like me) “we fixed it, and we're still Toyota."

My next new to me Tundra will likely be a 3rd Gen. I’m hoping this all gets sorted before then. My 2.5 was a fine truck, but it was all the things everyone says it was. Sturdy, reliable, a real Toyota. The 3rd Gen has some catching up to do. If they can crank up the reliable and dial back the overly fancy new tech, I’d be a buyer again someday. This engine business is very, very disheartening though.

The former can happen, the latter....I highly doubt it. For better and for worse, it's the road ALL new vehicles are going down.

I’d feel the same way if I were in your “collective” shoes as 3rd gen owners. It’s a crappy position to have been put in by Toyota. I had a GMC Sierra with the 5.3 that drank oil by the quart, especially when pulling trailers on the highway, and GM called it “normal usage.” But I was aggravated at GMC, not other owners or potential customers who discussed the issue. There’s quite a bit of thin skin here, and if hearing about the actual problems and proposed solutions with this motor is triggering, why keep coming back to read about it? There are a million other threads on this forum, and there’s also a button that allows folks to block anyone so they don’t have to see posts (especially mine hint hint). Folks can create an echo chamber or even create a separate thread where only 3.4TT cheerleading is allowed.

And no, I don’t expects zero failures. But I also don’t expect to see 2023s, 2024s and now a 2025 exhibiting the same failure after Toyota claims they changed the manufacturing process to clean out the machining debris. And the “one guy” reporting the 2025 (with the VIN listed) is the same guy that has scooped just about everyone here when it comes to tracking this problem and Toyota’s response. Those are facts, tough to hear for some, but they are facts nonetheless. The failures with this motor have continued to roll in despite assurances from Toyota that the issue was resolved. And if 3rd gen owners don’t want to hear facts, speculation, wild speculation, and general howling at the moon; well hanging out in an Internet forum on an 84 page thread devoted to speculation is masochism.

As for me, it’s about time for new trucks. I don’t run mine to one million miles, nor am I a millionaire who can buy two new trucks every 3 years. And I also use both of my trucks for truck things: towing/hauling/hunting/work/etc. I can’t get by with a long term rental I need to worry about scratching or throwing dirty tools in.

That said, I think the general discussion here has been pretty civil. We don’t all agree on certain things, but isn’t that the point of a discussion? Hell, a big problem in this world IMO are the snowflakes who can’t tolerate anyone holding an opinion contrary other own. And there are a couple of those snowflakey guys here too…. see above… but you’re not one of them. I know you don’t agree with some of the things I believe, and that’s alright. I do think there are some denialists and apologists who, if they’re being honest, wouldn’t have bought a new 3rd gen in the first place had they known the motor would be recalled by the NHTSA. There are other folks who like the truck enough to buy it regardless, and that’s fine too. Caveat Emptor… America… free country… all that.

I feel the same, and as a manufacturing person by day, this was all preventable. Poor execution on a good design is the most common way companies shoot themselves in the foot. Frustrating because the new Gen 3 looks sexy on 35's

most of the turds have been flushed by the mods here, general discussion has been fine I think. I don't mind the other view points at all now that the site has been cleaned up (thankfully to the really good mods here, Im sure that was a PITA). In fairness to some of the gen 3 guys who still react harder, there was a time when this was completely stupid here from a "few" gen 2 dumbasses being completely retarded over a truck and the fact that they didnt like the new tundra, there were lots of ban hammers handed out and rightfully so.

    anyway, back to trucks

how many miles on your 2019 that it needs replacement? You'll be shocked when you hook up a trailer and how much more stable these are and how much better they tow and pull, toyota knocked that out of the park for improvement over the gen 2.5, its not close. That assumes we are talking 1/2 ton pulling and not something you need a 3/4 or bigger for of course.

If I were in your shoes, I would look at the 2026 as thats supposed to be the mid-cycle refresh, so it may have some cool new stuff as well as more distance from the 22-23 recall since your sensitive to that

the other thing you could do if your worried about the failure after 5/50 powertrain, is just get the toyota platinum OEM 10 year 125K extended, that is $0 deductible with rental and travel protection.

I have 0 room after the recall, my truck was built the next month after the range ends, but you can't drive around worrying about shit that hasn't happened yet, its no way to live.

plus, the ford took a shit on the test drive, so the 3rd gen is already still Toyota reliability better anyways, lol, grass isnt always greener, and shit happens

Hello everyone first post. Didn’t read a though the thread to see if this was notified before. I called my dealer Tuesday and they said they just got the recall fix. I’m on the schedule, they said it would take 8-9 days to get the material in and about a week to replace the engine. They stated they wanted to do a few at a time and it will be done next month. Just wanted to let people know it’s happening. I figured it would be a year till they could get me. Bought mine in Dec 2021. I’ve had no issues with it minus the wind noise issue. I did my first oil change at 5k and second at 10k. Noticed some glitter type in the oil. Took it in and they said “ this is normal break in for the engine bearings “. I call bs on that but I had it documented. Hope this give some hope. Will update as it goes on and advise any extended warranty that offered.

I've never purchased an extra or extended warranty on a vehicle in my life until I bought my truck. I got the dealership to come down on the Platinum warranty and went with it. Nothing like peace of mind and I never have a second thought about driving my 2024.

    ^ this

due to gov mandated safety BS, EPA bs, and also the advancement of the amount of tech in all new vehicles, everything is a extended warranty purchase now a days. I get some don't like that, but it's not going back to simpler, it just isnt.

so it is what it is.

other option, just buy older ones that are simpler and run them as long as you can, 100% nothing wrong with that approach, its very sound. Thats just not for me, I like the new tundra, how well it rides and all the tech and boost like a mofo. The extended warranty isnt that much when done right either.

Biding my time. I keep my trucks for at least 10 years, so my 16' has just a bit longer to go. I buy them new and get them paid off ASAP, and then just run out the clock. Think they will have a Gen4 by 2026?

I don’t understand the accounting complexities, but I write off mileage the first year (that’s worth the most for new trucks for me) and then depreciate the truck in years after that. At 6 years, there’s no real benefit for me anymore tax wise on the 2019, plus it’s pretty roached to be honest. My 2017 is nicer, but that’s done some work and hunting/snowmobile trailer duty and is getting pretty scaly underneath. I also took a pretty good passenger side hit on the 2017. The 2017 is at about 145K miles. The 2019 has 85K on it, but those were hard miles. It’s a dedicated work truck and looks like it, and when I go do estimates or even show up on sites, I need to have a little more panache than either one offers at this point I’ll make it work for awhile… the 2026 refresh is probably where I’ll end up if the engine failures slow to a trickle TBH. If not, I’ll probably roll the dice on another GMC Sierra, but I’ll get the 2500 with the Duramax I don’t need that much truck, but the resale will be good and I won’t keep a GMC past 60K miles

Gen4 will be after 2030. Toyota spent billions for Gen3 so they will milk it all the way :)

Remember, Toyota believes in KAIZEN so they will keep improving it. First, you make it work then you make it work better.

Well, hopefully the reliability improves and the get this engine stuff behind them. I'd like to get a it fixed up. Not sure if I want the Pro and then wait a few years before I mod or what. Now that I have 35's on my Gen 2, there's no going back! I'm just not sure if I'm gonna do the 5.29's or wait for a new truck in a few years. I don't tow or haul anything but a mountain bike.

I have wondered if some manufacturers have been using smaller fuel tanks to reduce range of ICE vehicles to make EVs more palatable on paper.

The only 1/2 ton OEM without a mid 30s fuel tank option is GM, now that Titan is dead. Personally, I think it's more about manufacturers wanting to inflate their advertised "max payload" number that never exists. Possibly, driving customers to 3/4 tons that don't really suit their needs.

    My thoughts on this theory…

A fuel tank fill up takes maybe 4 minutes. No charge station will come a fraction close to that.

And 4 minutes adds 600 miles of highway range whereas half an hour charge might get you 250 miles on a very fast charging EV.

Correct, but I'm sure there is some re-tooling that can happen to up the torque at the expense of HP. It's also 0.7L less than the 3US-GSE. Ford's 5.0 for the truck is 400/410.
