True story. I used to go see Pantera play Matley's in Dallas, TX back in the early 80's. This was when we were all kids and Phil wasn't even in the band, yet. I had a feeling they would be famous and successful someday even then.

And, while it's true he has a very small body of work with QR, it's his very small body of work with Ozzy he's most known for. I enjoy a wide variety of music and genres, and it's incredible to me how influential RR was, and is, with such a small body of work. I'm hard-pressed to come up with many examples of such a musical feat and legacy.

I don't know how much appreciation he gets from the average person but he's definitely well respected among guitar players.

 

Yes, I don't believe the average person can truly appreciate RR from a musical standpoint, but in musical circles, it's fascinating how often his name comes up. And, again, with such a very limited body of work.

I guess my point is that after such a long period of time having passed since his death and such a small body of work, one would think his influence would be minimal, at best, but that really isn't the case. Yes, there are other 'big names' (e.g. Hendrix, Clapton, Van Halen, etc.), but their body of work is/was much larger by comparison. His legacy as a guitarist is simply fascinating.

Became an Eilen Jewell fan a couple years back. Loved the guitar playing, learned Jerry Miller played on many of her songs/albums. Never heard of him prior. Apparently, lots of legendary guitar players said he was one of the best. Sadly, he passed away this past July. He played the same Gibson his entire life. His wiki page, and one of my of my favorite songs from her with him playing.
