I didn't realize they had unions. That doesn't seem like a job that needs one. Just quit and go get another low paying no skill shit job.

 

We are being held hostage by giant corps that are subsidized by the government. They pay workers just enough to offset the cost of the suicide nets.

I would like to see America get back to the point where a single income can support a family of five with a white Pickett fence and a new Cadillac in the driveway.

Ultimately that means all those Amazon workers finding a new job in American manufacturing.

Fuck Amazon and its convenient, but shitty goods.

 

This is the best idea I've heard yet. And with how craptastic they're paid, and how much those companies get paid in subsidies from my tax dollars while underpaying their workers, it seems like that transition should be easy?

I'm seeing a lot more co-op style manufacturing companies recently. Unions are critical in any place where workers are under-leveraged and/or crucial to daily life and/or critical for business to function. I'm down for either.

 

It would be nice if business operated in a manner that all employees could share in the success.

Those are exactly the jobs that need a Union. A few years ago their turnover rate was 150%, more than double most warehousing.

My company catered out food as an afterthought. It'd go a lot farther with the workers that make your dough if you just provide a EOY bonus or something. I'd rather have money than some room temperature food.

 

They never want to do that, it sets a precedent which then becomes expectation. I'm actually shocked at how many companies won't do a holiday party anymore. Wife had to pay out of pocket to treat her team this year because their company, which is quite profitable, one of the most profitable in their business sector.

There are right ways for companies to do it, though, which are fair for them and the staff. For my previous employer, European company in a non-EU member country, they had staffing levels for each person.I think there were 9 levels total, where intern was 9, entry level FTE was 8, and after you got one promotion you were at a 7? V suite was levels 2-3, C-suite was level 1.

Anyway, starting level 7 or 6 you became eligible for a 'maximum bonus', which could be a variable number ranging from $1k up to ????. They did a great job of tracking earnings and profitability for each segment, even calculating in how the operational teams (technology, facilities, etc.) contributed to the overall earning for segments. After they finalized crutching the numbers for the prior year and announced earnings publicly, they'd basically assign a percentage of max-bonus you were eligible for.

When they laid me off 3/24, I think I was at tier 5 and my max-bonus was $16k? But they'd been sucking wind for a couple of years, so one year we got 0% because 3 of our 5 main segments did poorly, and though I had nothing to do with that working in the technology side, and we cut millions in costs to save the company $$$, still got zero. Caused a lot of talent loss, that decision. Then the next year, I think it was 50%, and when they cut me, HR basically said they'd give me 50% of max-bonus, and I should sign off on it, because they were about to announce withholding all bonuses until they assess how things were going later in the year.

Needless to say, they were doing things the right way over my years there. Where they went wrong was during those 0% and withholding years, the V+ level folks were still getting bonuses in the 6-7 figure range, the Board was still getting bonuses in the 6-7 figure range, white staff at director level and below got jack shit. The fact they were top-heavy because all the mid-management people (at director and head-of level) found ways to get promoted to V+ level, leaving the middle managment layer nearly non-existent and widening the divide between the do-ers and the manage-ers didn't help.

At the end of the day, I guess the worst shit eventually floats to the surface and spoils the pool for everyone. There's always someone who is adamant about being on top where they don't belong, doing a job they don't understand in a way that benefits themselves and their cronies, The Peter Principle definitely applies.

Sometimes glad I got out when I did, but when they stopped funding our holiday parties, stopped lunches, stopped funding any events which were integral to having a culturally healthy, productive, non-toxic work environment so those up above could look good and get outrageous bonuses, well ... yeah. It was miserable. I miss the people. I don't miss the job, or the bullshit that it came to be. It's sad too, I absolutely LOVED that place in its heyday. Such a great place to work.

 

I've never heard of the Peter Principal, so I had to look into it and I do agree. I think that some people have a personal limit and really shouldn't go past that for productivity purposes. We can be good at our position and paid well for being good at our position. Financial increases over title increases could make a lot of people happier, too. I'm happy with my position that I'm in because I'm good at it. I wasn't good being a sales manager and stepped down (on top of a lot of other company politics that I didn't agree with and it was a BS position anyway). Appreciation by raises would be nice, but I'm pretty mentally checked out here. There isn't really any incentive to go "above and beyond" when it doesn't pay off.

My wife's company gives our yearly merit raises on top of yearly bonuses based on your yearly salary. They really do take care their employees and I am very jealous when I reflect on my own industry choices.

 

This is the overarching problem today, and it's why "nobody wants to work".

FWIW, the "nobody wants to work" line is complete and utter bullshit because it falls short a few words before it gets to the real story. It's not that nobody wants to work. It's that nobody wants to work for the patheticly low-ass wages and benefits the job market is offering.

Same at my old place and my wife's places. We both always got a COL/inflation bump every year, in the 2%-4% range. And if you were really kicking ass, that could go up to 6-8% which was meaningful.

Meanwhile, I have friends who've been working for the same hourly wage since before the lockdowns, and a couple of them are in roles considered "essential". What I see our teachers and law enforcement getting paid is absolutely f'ing nuts to me, like the people who are teaching the next generation to take over, and the people keeping the peace so they make it to adulthood, and they're having to share an apartment with roomates, live in squalor, or commute from an hour away to have something 'decent'.

The whole thing is wild.

I'd say transfer to a technology career, but from what I've seen in the market while looking the last few weeks, and the others in my network who've gotten laid off with no replacement planned, I'll be shocked if half the roles which exist today still exist in 3-5 years.

 

I finally mounted my trans filter and resealed the pan. Then I busted my right hand. It's swollen up to the size of a softball. Definitely not going into the truck today
