Even with age and experience and having a process in place, doo-doo sometimes happens; that's life. My most recent mangling was yesterday. This time of year is riding season and I was replacing the battery in one of my bikes. Even though I placed a rag on the positive terminal to isolate it while connecting the negative, the rag somehow slipped off and the positive terminal made contact and melted part of the mounting. Just glad it didn't fry any of the system and all is well. Fired right up and took it for a ride. I was embarrassed, but no one is perfect. Shit does happen to all of us occasionally, no matter the level of prep.

Replaced the broken tailgate handle. New part has metal where it counts. The plastic tab that broke on the OEM handle is metal on this replacement. Now...who knows. Toyota is generally pretty good with engineering so this part being metal might just put stress on some other non-metal part...and the original lasted 20+ years. BUT, for under $40, I'm happy.

I was just thinking how I am entirely suspectable to something like this T-case example... I am very thankful that people continue to share these experiences and their mistakes such that we can all learn.

So I have the tailgate panel off right now to take it in to a shop and try to get an HDPE replacement.

However, with it off, I noticed how much lighter the tailgate feels and I wonder if maybe aluminum would be the winning choice.

Definitely thinking 1/8” HDPE at the most.

Anyone buy a grease gun lately? They all seem to have terrible reviews so just gonna try luck on one. Plan to have moly loaded per the FSM as already have one with Staplex EP GC-LB NLGI2 Complex 500 degree drop for the rest of the driveline zerks.

How so? I bought a Napa one several years back and retrofitted it with a 3 prong Lincoln coupler so it wouldn’t be a b!tch to pull off the fitting.

I have a spare if you want it. LMK. I posted a pic of it on here a few days back. Found it, loaded, sitting on its box, on the side of the road. But seems alright.

Me and Casey mangled my old carrier bearing for no reason, because we thought it was the culprit of a noise and it was fine, but we ruined it lol. Also I destroyed one of Beau's sockets with his impact on his carrier bearing. So are we in the club now too? :D

@Jack McCarthy - a lot (20% neg) indicate they don't prime, break, or can't get the coupler off the fitting. So you use a Lincoln 5852 tip?

@shifty` that's super kind! Sluethed the photo and it looks like its might come from home depot and a good thing to pass along to someone else without shipping. Thank you very much though.

    Very Nice!

Yep. Never have an issue getting the coupler off like I did with the 4 prong one.

But, after all that truck has been through, it's still rolling. Noah has probably forgotten more knowledge about what he has learned about his Tundra in the process than what I remember.

These grease guns are very similar to mine, overall. And will probably function 10x better than anything currently on the market from mainland China, at less $$ in many cases.

    https://www.ebay.com/itm/196506871830

    $20ish shipped, not bad.

I really don't understand the complaint with 4WD shaft zerk access. You can spin the driveshaft by hand to get it in the perfect position. My gun, with a very standard tip, has no issues with getting on a zerk. I usually put a little forward pressure on the tip with one hand to ensure I don't pop free, while I pump with the other hand. I have no problems greasing any zerk on our driveline, and I have not modified my standard tip.

My gun is nothing special. Decades old ass pistol grip. Pics I just took for proof and of gun. I converted to the flexible coupler when I got the Tundra b/c it was longer than the whip I had on it and I needed the articulation. I have three of these guns total, one I need to rebuild right now. The other two are loaded up with different greases for diff't purposes.

Absolutely. I just feel compelled, like we need to secret-santa his ass some front and rear covers, now he's (hopefully) not going to be commuting so much for work now, thru deer terriroty during peak deerfuckery hours.

As I think someone else mentioned, it must be that newer couplers have thicker walls. I mean, I don't think on a forum full of people doing their own wrenching, we have too many who don't realize you can spin the front driveshaft to get the zerk in sight...:) Or that so many would resort to grinding the coupler to get it to fit.

I've been doing my own driveshaft lubing for a couple decades. I cannot get the gun on a couple of those zerks.

No work today on the Tundra. But my newish camper came in an old Ford truck-bed trailer. Late 60's, early 70's. Apparently that means a 9" rear end? I don't want to be the guy on the side of the road with a missing wheel, so while the trailer isn't worth sinking any real money into, I DO want to check the bearings and diff fluid (still has original axle and pumpkin).

So...a 9" rear diff requires pulling axles and removing the gears from the housing to change the fluid?? Crazy. I only expect to have to do this once, but damn. Makes me appreciate the Tundra.
