I assume it would be not legal to temporaily install a string of LED Christmas lights around the top of the bed using the AC outlet. Any opinions or has anyone done it?

Depends on your local/state laws, but I see it around here (TX) sometimes. The primary concern is in the front of the vehicle and centers around red/blue with strobe effects.

Would love to see it, but probably illegal.

Most states have laws on the books for colors of lights and flashing lights.
Typically: red & blue = bad
Flashing red and/or blue = really bad

Probably illegal, but I used to do it on the racks of my 4Runner and no Grinches ever bothered me.

I did the small multi-colored LED strings, so pretty unobtrusive and clearly Christmas lights.

If you had large red/blue bulbs it might get a different reaction.

We see it all the time here. I like it - it’s makes me smile every time I see them. As long as it isn’t flashing and distracting I don’t see an issue.

Tint and wheels. Decked box in the bed. S and B Cold Air filters under the hood. Shiftpower throttle response controller.
I snapped this a couple of weeks ago. It was parked in a shopping center parking lot and not driving. I'm sure they are not driving it like this. The cops in that town are pretty hardcore so I'm sure they wouldn't allow it. The cops there will arrest you if you cuss and a bystander was "offended" by your cussing. Obviously unconstitutional but no one that has been arrested has(or can afford) to appeal it to the higher courts.

I say the cops would probably stop it, but then again they let these dipshits with with trucks that squat in the rear (with their headlights pointed upwards) to drive around. :)

Needs a big 'ol red nose attached to the grille, some jingle bells added to the lights, a huge bag of goodies in the bed, and a full-on Santa driving it!

If a cop gives you a ticket for that call him the grinch. But seriously, they look great but the problem no one thinks about is the lights flapping around on your paint scratching it up.

I used to have a bedrack on my Tacoma and I wrapped it in lights one year. Looked really cool and didn’t get bothered by LE but was such a pain to take off when the season was over. Don’t have that truck any more of the bedrack so haven’t done it again.

We had a red Ford Ranger around town years ago that would have a fully trimmed out tree in the bed. Never saw it sitting still so I have no idea how everything stayed put.
Had a sign on the tailgate "Santa's sleigh." Of course, driver was an older guy with a bushy white beard.
    True story.

That's exactly why when I did it on my 4Runner they only went around the racks.

OK, I know these are pitiful and don't give me a hard time. It's my first season. Finally found a use for that puny outlet in the bed. Can I keep the AC power on indefinitely? Can I extend the default shutoff time whatever it is, say 6 hours?

Just a suggestion, but they might get more attention and compliments if you move them from inside the bed to the tops of the bedrails.

Yes, agree completely. First year, slapped on the rail clips for the first time and lashed the string to them. But could not figure out to hold them on the top rail without duct tape. A longer strand would have given me some options. Like I said, first year and will work it for next year.

Technically it’s not explicitly illegal in Washington state, but all the top LEO have issued statements saying not to put them on since they are/can be distracting and there are plenty of people that have been pulled over for them. That being said the local sheriffs have not even given me a second look so :notsure: I’m going to keep sending it!
