Looking at purchasing this 2010 4.6L Tundra, 108,xxx miles.

Car history shows 1 accident (slight damage, minor, no airbags deployed) to Left Front.

Spray/corrosion of some sort, seems to originate from battery area. Could a battery spray or slosh and create this?

    Thoughts?

Would you shy away from the purchase because of this?

Tundras batteries are known to corrode...quick...
Also check cam towers for oil leaks

Looks to me like some battery corrosion got hosed off and sprayed into the engine bay.

    seems a bit high.
Also check AIP pumps. they tend to fail on early models.

My thoughts as well. Looks like someone hosed or brushed the corrosion off of the terminals. That stuff splatters and stains the hell out of everything.

    So...

Gave it a look again today and sure enough, drivers side cam tower/valve cover gasket has a nice little leak in the rear corner. Looks like it has cause some build up on the underside of the crossmember as well from the oil catching the wind and coating the crossmember. Nothing major obviously but an $1800 fix at the Toyota Dealer locally.

Unless they come down a chunk in price i dont feel like a $20k truck should leak a drop...

I wouldn't pay that price, that's a lot of mileage and the smaller motor. I'd keep looking

Thanks. I have em down to 18k now actually (20 with taxes and license fees)

If they dropped it the cost of the service for that leak I might be tempted

It would map a code from what I remember. So a check engine light could be on if this was the case. If it was cleared you'd need to unplug the battery for a bit, reset and drive it for a bit to get it to "re-code". Alternatively you would have to pull the AIP/S from the truck to confirm and clean. The pumps are located in two different spots the 4.7 valves and pump are under the intake manifold.

Should note: This wont damage or detriment your truck in any way if failing, however, it's an EPA required device and can cause emissions failure.

    128K less mileage
    Bigger engine
    Higher re-sale
    $15k

I would keep looking or get this

Not a snow balls chance in hell I would pay $20k for a truck with 208,000 miles on it and being the 4.6l.

Yeah...I had (have) exactly the same thing on my '13 CM when I bought it. Always assumed it was from the battery.

Anyone look at the battery tray under the battery?

That corrosion might wind up spraying all over the place like that with rain coming through the grill at speed too.

My 2013 did the same thing as well. I need to get an Interstate battery put in. Curious anyone know if Toyota will pay for a new one? I have warranty until 85k miles.

Buy a better battery, interstate, or optima. I had horrible luck with Napa branded batteries off gassing and corroding areas around the battery. Asked a mechanic friend and he stated all low price batteries will start your vehicle but there not sealed as well as some of the premium brands. I switched to optima and never again had any corrosion issues.

I think batteries are considered consumable.
