The previous owner had the exhaust completely welded. Do I need to replace my whole exhaust to get my stock clamp connection back?20241203_122541.jpg

I needed that stock connection because I was gonna put on the MBRP resonator and I didn't look under until after I got the exhaust. I don't wanna modify the new resonator because I was gonna swap it when I buy another truck next year.

The joint where the "Y" joins is where airflow dies on our trucks.

Taking a look at the exploded parts diagram using the "how to find parts" sticky thread, it would appear someone cut the tail off the Y pipe that holds the resonator, then cut the head off the muffler pipe, and welded a glasspack or similar style bullet in between. Effectively swapping the resonator out for whatever that is there.

If you wanted to get back to stock, if I were you, I'd hit a junkyard and pilfer a clean Access Cab exhaust off a comparable truck and unbolt from both cats, then walk away with assembled cat-back exhaust.
If you wanted to improve things a bit, you could delete everything after the cats, and run true dual exhaust from the cats back with a cleaner looking dual exit, maybe dumping before the wheels, or after?
If you wanted to go aftermarket, I believe Bassani or Gibson or possibly others make a dual cat-back exhaust system for our trucks, you may need to pick up a couple of hangers though, if the kit doesn't supply.

I looked a second time and I need to replace my whole exhaust the previous owner had the whole thing cut and welded. So it's one big piece right now. To remove anything I'll have to cut it out. I probably will just wait until I buy a new truck sadly. Or just delete everything after the cats.

Every stock connection point was cut out and bigger pipe slid on and welded

Yeah, I mean, your best bet, honestly, is to hit a junkyard or find a parts truck to pick from on FB Marketplace, then cannibalize its exhaust.

Can't remember where you are in the world or if you've even shared that, but when I go to my local FB Marketplace and search for tundra parts truck access cab I get a shitload of results. Like, I see at least half a dozen AC trucks with exhaust intact, and several complete axles.

I'll look at FB Marketplace. But at this point I might just cut out after the Y pipe and use a exhaust coupler to add the tail back. But I'll decide after FB Marketplace. I just need this to be less then $200.

Would it sound bad is I just cut after the glass pack and dump it before the rear axle?

If you’re deleting your muffler, it’s gonna be loud, and you’re losing all backpressure once that muffler comes off. Backpressure is not a bad thing, some engines often function better with some degree of backpressure in the exhaust system. I don’t think people understand this point.

if I were you, I think you’d be better off cutting out the glass pack and straight piping that section. It’ll drop the brap sound and should leave you with some throat. Note, I’m not an exhaust tech, I just hate what exhaust sounds like with packs.

I looked into this once before when my muffler and resonator section had to be replaced. You can get a flange that matches in size to what Toyota uses, however, it doesn’t have the recess for the ring gasket. I went to a couple of machine shops in my area and the best quote I got was $250 for the setting up of the CNC cutter and $1 for each part. That was 10 years ago.

It would have been nice if other members were interested so we could get a group buy going. No such luck though.

That's expensive. I honestly just thought about cutting out the flange on a junked tundra and welding or using an exhaust clamp to attach it. Because it's looking like at this point a new exhaust is cheaper and easier. I just cut out the old one in as big of pieces I can. Then when I sell it next year put it back in with exhaust clamps or weld.

Have you looked at all on FB Marketplace?

Like, I dunno whereabouts you are, but for example, here's everything from the muffler back, OEM brand new, for $285: Here's the same from Walker, a respectable brand, for $135: There's deals out there, sometimes you gotta look for parts trucks, but people sell exhaust stuff. Sometimes you need to look for different phrases since people call stuff out differently. Like 2006 Tundra exhaust, or 2006 tundra muffler, or 2006 tundra cat back.

I looked and asked around. The only people with parts trucks in my area don't have the exhaust, and nobody sells exhaust parts. I'm just unlucky on my FB marketplace. I look everyday though so I will definitely find something.

Just for reference - my cat-back was <$300 (last month). Resonator and clamps from Amazon and muffler/tailpipe from O'reillys.

Curious, what'd you do for y-pipe, resonator, and muffler/tailpipe?

I'm mostly interested in the y-pipe. While there's nothing currently wrong with mine, it vexes me how badly bank 1 (IIRC) is smushed into the Y. There's no way both banks are getting equal backpressure.

stock. I didn't realize the resonator and muffler were leaking. I swapped the bed for local inspection. I originally ordered a tailpipe from Amazon, but apparently it was damaged during shipping and they cancelled it. O'reillys actually had one in stock.

They are the cheapest ones, so I'll revisit the exhaust in another couple of years when this one rusts away.

I was thinking of chopping the old Y into 2 pipes and starting a dual exhaust from there. They look small, but running separately would increase flow. I've been watching the threads regarding removing the resonator as I don't want a drone either.

I think one of my cats will go first as the flange is paper thin and the O2 bung stud is gone - it's currently sealed with JB Weld.

Interested to see what others are doing.

Right now I'm just going to get new cats and y pipe. At some point if I feel like it I may remove the resonator from the Y pipe. Depends on if i want it louder or not.

Why get new cats? What's wrong with your cats? If nothing, these trucks are so picky on cats, I wouldn't get new ones.

Everything is weld in one big piece. I can't use them unless I get the whole exhaust rewelded. After cutting everything out.

Wait ... I swore I saw a picture and the Y-pipe is bolted to the cats, then Y-pipe is welded to glasspack?

Honestly the whole cut and weld job probably cost almost as much as replacing the whole exhaust. It makes me wonder how crazy the 1st owner was. They got the frame coated in instead of replaced so it's rusting from the inside out. The exhaust is a mess to replace anything. Half the lights on the truck were dead, 8+ year old tires.

Not sure diameter. Buy 6 or 8 of these

,2.25" Amazon steel ( or alum) piping kit ( i just got a whole kit of 304ss for 99$) on sale give you. Take to muffler shop ( pref in a cheap part of town and ask to speak to welder) , if you wamt to save even more money and have a :
    Band saw
    Sander
    De-bur'r
    Sandpaper

You can make it however you want and just take in v-bands and have them welded on. Prob cost you $80. ( given I have extremely talented hispanic owned exhaust shops surrounding me) in lower cost of living areas, so these things can be negotiated easily.

But, as other mentioned , in my opinion only you need resonators atleast ( on top of cats) or prepare for your neighbors to hate you.

I don't think my neighbors can really care my mom's got a type R lol. But I'll definitely have at least one resonator, because I bought one already.

Well if u go v-band route,, adjusting or adding/removing is super fast. And your Mom sounds like a cool lady. Please tell me its a b18c5 one, even if its not true.

Nah it's a 2017 still loud though, hear it coming down the street. But I might just buy cats and y pipe combo off eBay. It would be easier for me and if I do delete the resonator that y pipe would come with I can just cut it out myself and use 2 clamps to put in a straight pipe.

    Thanks some janky shit.:eek2:
It looks like the job the guy did when I needed my stock connections put back on.
I first had a Magnaflow with the drone from hell but bought a @dirtydeeds bolt on system and needed the OEM fittings back.
    I ended up buying a new tailpipe..
