2009 Corolla that was a little old lady's grocery getter. Runs good, drives decent but needs struts and brakes real bad. 98k on the clock and if I had to guess it's missed a few oil changes because the po said "all I do is put gas in it and drive it"
I need a different daily and the price is just about right at $4k.
So, would you buy this with your money or would you pass. I like to look for service records when I buy used, this has NONE.

Yup, I would be all over that. I have a 2008 Pontiac Vibe (Toyota Matrix twin) for a daily beater. Super reliable plus good gas mileage.

I'd have had cash in hand before they finished getting the price out of their mouth...I would totally use that as a work commuter.

I have a 2011 for my daily. All I do is drive it and put gas into it. I’d buy that one in a heartbeat if I had a need.

In a heartbeat! Even if you put another 2k into getting it right, that's a solid commuter.

It'll get a $500 pair of quick struts and some duralast gold brake pads because I'm a cheapass.
Maybe $650 if it ends up needing rotors.

It's tempting as hell, but at the same time I got this camper and the money is supposed to get a bigger truck.

I don't think a good 3/4 is gonna fall in my lap for 4k though

Pull the dipstick and see what the oil looks like.

It wasn't terrible, sticker on the window said it was done at 95 and is due again 100, date was 4/24. Poor things needs the dust knocked off it.

    Buy it.

If they did 5k oil changes you are in good hands. 10k...hard pass. Once these engines start burning oil it's downhill from there.

    Some problem areas:

AC drain under the passenger side carpet.

HVAC knobs are delicate. Be gentle.

These cars are hard on front struts. I put all four struts/shocks on my daughters 2011 Corolla S for under 325.00

Brakes can be an issue if you don't keep the rears adjusted properly. These don't auto adjust.

I would have someone watch the rear when you load up the motor to see if it's burning oil. Any puffs..pass.

Transmission is super easy to service and actually has a dipstick.

Spark plugs are cheap and easy to do.

We get a solid 32-33 mpg in town/mixed and 35-38 mpg highway.

I wouldn't hesitate to buy it. Even with what you've described, that's a great value.

I purchased my daughter's Corolla from a retired lady as well. It was her sporty get around town car. She was sad to sell it due to being restricted to a wheelchair. She purchased a wheelchair van.

Similar situation here. I could see the pain when she said, "I just shouldn't be driving, I only go to my doctor and I use dial-a-ride."
I'm gonna scoop it up in the morning and throw some mid grade parts at it. Should be good for at least another 100k. Maybe even run some Uber eats in that pig. Lol

This one had a paint job (not a great one) a few years ago, she said it was done under a recall because it flaked off the quarter panels.

Can't stand white, but I wouldn't let it go for a work ride. Take care of the maintenance and $4k will get you 200k in mileage. Can't beat that.

The 2AZ-FE Engine 2.4L 4 cyl had oil consumption issues in 2009-2011 Corollas. However, as long as you keep it filled, it can still run a long time.

100,000 miles means the engine was broken in for you. I purchased a 2005 Corolla XRS with 125,000. Now up to 210,000 and get 40 MPG on the highway. Not one major issue.

Good or bad I am now the owner of a 09 Corolla. Got it cleaned up a bit and got the brakes, the struts will have to wait for funding. Made an appointment to get the windows tinted and a new HU installed next week because that factory radio has zero quality. It needs paint correction, but thats back burner stuff.
Gonna run a good interior detail on it and hopefully get the weird smell out. All in all I'm very satisfied with it, this damn thing has a cleaner under carriage than some of the women I've been with

You may want to consider the going to the detailing forum here: https://www.tundras.com/forums/detailing.66/

I needed some paint correction on my 2005 Corolla and my wife’s 2017 Civic.

If you have Random Orbital Polisher, paint correction will not cost much and will impress you. I used my Griots G9 Random Orbital Polisher and the Griots Ceramic All-in-One Wax (Item#10895), not the liquid With the Griots 6.5" Orange Correcting Pads. It made a big difference. All the water spots on my car disappeared. To my wife’s amazement, it also removed scratches on her Civic. Which made her very happy.

I have also purchased Black pads as recommended by War Machine. I’ll try them in the spring.
