So does anyone know if it is a good idea to do this service on an engine with this high of mileage. My mechanic replaced my starter last month which is ridiculously involved because Toyota decided to bury the starter in the intake manifold.:monocle: While he was in there he decided to recommend PCV valve replacement and a BG Fuel System Carbon Clean Service with a machine. Is it worth the $255 for the cleaning? Is it super important to have an OEM PCV Valve from the dealer or one that is from the part store that the mechanic will warranty because he won't warranty a part that a customer brought in, even if it is Toyota OEM in the package. Otherwise if i want him to order from the dealer there will be shipping costs also. Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks

You failed to tell us which engine you have, so we're kinda stabbing at guesses here...

BG's products are great, and proven to work. If I were going to do anything though, for a bit more money, I'd rather do the BG Dynamic Engine flush. And I'd consider new injectors, and new Denso brand coil packs (just don't buy them from a counterfeit mill like scAmazon or fleaBay).

If you have the V8, you'd basically be looking at a brand new engine in function.

if you've been using better fuel, consistent oil changes, occasionally using fuel system cleaners. Ehhhhhhh

but it won't hurt if that's what youre asking

Regarding the PCV valve, is that really a 'while you are in there' part? For some reason, I thought that was right there near the bottom of the oil filler tube and was essentially a screw in part. Minimal disassembly required. Your 'profile' says 4.7, so guessing it is the V8 you have.

ETA - The point I am making (and failed to state!) is that it may be something you can do after the mechanic has done his thing.

It’s easy to do and Toyota has it as a “once every 15k” (or 30k, I forget). Ultimately if it functions when tested you’re good to go.

More than the valve, the vent hoses are what tend to crack up at the ends. There’s one from the PCV valve to TB, and another from passenger valve cover to TB on the V8 in our trucks. I proactively replaced mine this year or last. They were pretty cracked up, even with “only” 70k miles and 17 years.

I use BG religiously. (It helps that I work at a dealer am compensated by BG). It's great stuff. Use the search like this and you'll see tons of posts by me using this in my truck. I love their stuff.

    upload_2024-12-6_14-35-0.png

As for your question, I feel like the machine clean is a bit much. The stuff costs like $30 and you're paying the rest in labor. The same can be achieved using the vacuum method. You cvan fabricate your own tube from some clear vacuum line and a soda bottle.

So i called the dealer and asked if they perform that service on a rig with my mileage. They said they would not recommend nor would they do that service because of the high likelihood that it would blow out the cat converters. Hmmmm

This looks like it cleans valves, but not injectors.

You'll need a soda bottle and clear vacuum line. Drill a hole in the cap of a soda bottle the same o.d. as the vacuum line. Pull the line through so that it will pick up from the bottom of the bottle when capped. Fill the bottle with your top engine carbon cleaner and attach your vacuum line to a vacuum inlet on the intake near the throttle body and run your engine. Let idle until the bottle is empty from cleaner (20 minutes or so) and then rev it up to about 3k and hold for a few minutes. It'll blow out all of the excess build up and she'll be good to go.

When I worked at a Dodge dealership after high school I remember BG having plastic coins in the can. The BG rep would comp us $2 bills for every plastic coin.

Sounds strangely similar to what I do with Seafoam. I was thinking it was an injector cleaner. That's what I'd love to do, run cleaner directly thru the injectors.

Gotta pull em and rig up a 9volt battery setup. Someone should make one with an injector plug, a momentary switch and a 9volt plug on the battery end. We could take turns doing injector cleaning and pass it around among members.

It's a good idea, to build such a rig to ship around.

But then again, it looks like I can get a full set of OEM Toyota injectors (these are for VVTi 2UZ, maybe not for pre-2004?) for $128 during the 25% off sales. https://autoparts.toyota.com/products/product/injector-set-fuel-232090f020

As-is looks like it's $171 today w/o discounts from my local dealer. Almost seems silly maybe to build a rig.

Just a fuel system cleaning like the product is introduced into the fuel rail, shouldn’t be a problem.

if it is an upper intake cleaning where the product is introduced into the intake manifold, there’s a good chance it will damage the catalytic converters.

IMO, unless you are performing the cleaning to address specific issues, I wouldn’t do it. Port injected engines like your Tundra shouldn’t need a cleaning if running good quality fuel.

Direct Injected engines are another story.
