2005 Long bed 4.0

I want to thank everyone for the contributions and tech write-ups.

My name's Nicole. We just bought a Tundra 3 weeks ago and thanks to all the info here, i have been able to repair and tinker with it with ease.

I found a 2005 base model 4.0 V6 on autotrader and set about convincing my boyfriend that he needed it. I have an 01 Outback 3.0, but this is my first truck since my 97 Tacoma was totalled 8yrs ago. So this has been a long time coming and I've owned several Toyota trucks before.

Anyway!!! I added factory cruise control & fog lights, fixed the squeaking in reverse & disabled the "hey you left the keys in the ignition" beeper, as well as the TPMS lignt. All thanks to articles on here!

So i just want to add some of my findings and maybe help some others.

The squeaking in reverse was the last u-joint, by the diff. 2WDs dont have grease fittings, so i sprayed WD40 gel lube on all of the joints & the center bearing, but i think it was mostly just that rearmost ujoint. The gel creeped in over a few days and i kept spraying it down and now its totally silent. If your truck makes a squeak in reverse that has a rotational frequency with the speed, then grease your U-Joints or do like I did if you have a 2WD.

The cruise was so easy I couldnt believe it, and I suppose its due the electronic throttle body. Now, we do not have a cruise light on the dash, but it was as easy as buying an 05 Tundra cruise control switch and installing it. You take the airbag off with a torx bit on each side, then plug in the switch & connect the ground lead to the airbag. Use 2 screws to bolt in the switch. I bought the cruise control side cover as well, also used on ebay. Very easy and straightforward.

The fog lights were easy too! I got housings from Amazon. The dummy plugs popped out and the new lights popped in, but I did have to take them back out & adjust them down. The electrical connectors were there, taped up out of the way. I bought a new relay for the fog postion in the fuse box under the hood & replaced the turn signal stalk with one that had the fog light switch included. And boom! All of that worked too. Very easy and basically waiting for you if you have a base model. I was done and only waiting for the relay, so I robbed the power outlet relay to see if it all worked. Several of the relays are the same.

The key beeper was easy too. Just pull off the lower dash with four 10mm bolts. Then unplug the small white connector on the ignition cylinder.

Now, the seat belt beep is still there. We tested and learned its only watching the drivers seat belt latch. It beeps like 5 times when you turn the key. You can shut it off by quickly buckling in, or avoid it altogether by doing the seatbelt before you put the key in. I may try to bypass this too, ha!

We found out that 3 tire sensors were dead and the 4th had a low battery. It was $350 for new ones so I talked my boyfriend into letting me take the TPMS bulb out of the cluster and getting rubber valves next time we need tires. Well, a 2005 doesnt have bulbs in the cluster! I was able to defeat the TPMS by grounding a wire. I removed the glove box & unplugged the TPMS module up off to the right of the radio. Then I cut the pink wire (3rd from bottom right) and grounded it from the harness end to bare steel behind the glove box with a self tapping screw. Now the tire light is off!

2) spraying the u-joints should be looked at as a temporary fix. I would highly suggest getting those replaced sometime down the road. Ujoints failing is not a fun time.

Yeah, Ninja is right, you applied a bandaid. Slap in some new Spicer brand u-joints. It came from the factory with Dana/Spicer, you should return it to Dana/Spicer.

If you don't want to press out/in new joints on your own, most driveline shops will do the work, around me it's typically $80-90 per joint on average for labor and parts.

Now is a good time to refresh, because any driveline rotational distortion or vibration caused by a failed/failing joint can kill carrier bearings, pinion bearings, output shaft bearings.

Also, OP on that Ujoint, you can get a grease needle from most auto shops that goes in your grease gun. Its a little needle that allows you to poke it into boots and put grease in places you cant always get it. There is a single lip wiper seal around the caps of the Ujoint that you could poke a grease needle thru and pump the caps full of grease since the joint isnt actually greasable with a fitting. I would for sure look into replacing the joint before it gets worse though but the WD40 is a temporary bandaid, the grease needle is a longer term bandaid, but the real fix would be replacing the ujoint.
