TRD Performance Air Intake System

Attached are the 18 page "installation" and programming instructions for the TRD CAI? P/N PTR03-34223.
I was able to locate a kit yesterday after having about 6 orders cancelled from various dealers, hoping to receive and install on my 2024 Pro.

I know this is a port installed option now, and Toyota is attempting to sell this as a $3500 performance kit with exhaust and a badge.

Question - if the TRD intake is installed, just like the AFE intake or K&N (which do not require a re-calibration) intake why would the TRD specifically require an ECU flash or set off a DTC? Does the TRD intake allow more air than the AFE/K&N or how is it so different such that an ECU flash is needed?

Likely that the intake tube diameter is different than oem. The change affects air speed inside. This change in air readings is what sets the DTC.

11/02/2024 - I had my local dealer recalibrate the ECU to the performance calibration based on thread #2 here (thank you). However, the dealer said that they had to remove my rear seat to recalibrate some of the back sensors. One hour of labor was $188 but I got out of there for a total of $283. I'd assume had I had the ECU recalibrated in those first 15 miles I drove before the CEL came on and parking sensor light, the dealer wouldn't have messed with the rear. Sounds ridiculous imo

In terms of performance, it is worth it to me. It is very responsive and smooth. I can certainly feel the difference, especially on the highway where I can get on it. When I say smooth, I am referring to the shifting. One huge difference between what feels like perfect shit points, is that I don't feel the transmission. Prior to installing the intake and recalibration, my truck always had a hard shift anywhere between 85mph to 105mph. The very first shift above 80mph you could feel the metal on metal shift and hear it. That was if you were getting on it like passing someone at 85mph (I live in Texas lol). Since the recal, I am not feeling any rough shifts and I got on my local tollway and opened it up a few times from 65-85mph cruising.

One thing to note about gas mileage. After I got on it on our tollway, I drove 22 miles afterwards on regular city roads with stop lights and I got 20.3 mpg. That is a first. I never ever got anything close to that before.

As far as the DTC's or CEL's that you get, at one point my left screen on the instrument cluster was flashing every couple of seconds. When I would exit, it would come back on in five seconds. Anyways, the truck went into low power mode at one point and it ran like crap. It was almost like riding the clutch as everything was louder than it wanted to go. Luckily I only had to drive a couple of miles (through a neighborhood) to get to my dealer.

Lastly, the auto stop/start kept saying 'battery charging' after the recalibration, and it never worked in the 22 miles I drove testing the mpg. Weird. If it keeps up I'll take it back to the dealer but weird coincidence. It did work before the recalibration, and after I installed the TRD Perf CAI.

Update on 11/01/2024 - Got it installed. I have a 2024 Platinum non-hybrid 4x4. After driving 15 miles the CEL and a Parking Sensor light came on. After 34 miles, about seven lights lit up so I def need the performance ECU reflash calibration since the sensor attached to the lid is obviously not set for the larger intake. Didn't have install instructions but was easy. I'd recommend installing the filter in the air box first, then securing the lid and putting the intake in. My Calibration ID is 896630CV4101. In terms of performance, after 34 miles I can say my MPG improved about 1-2 MPGs messing around on the city roads. Biggest thing is the acceleration is even more responsive than stock, it shifts very smooth and at a range that feels perfect, and the turbos were about 5x louder. Once I get the TRD Performance Exhaust or maybe a Borla, I think it is possible to see all the gains advertised. I like it.

10/28/2024: The TRD Performance intake P/N PTR03-34223 was finally shipped!

10/21/2024: I ordered the TRD Performance Intake on 9/21/24 for my June 2024 built Platinum. Toyota responded to the dealer today and says it is a port install only and not for sale anymore. The dealer I ordered from said they will fight to get this released. Said different factions of Toyota don't sometimes mesh well. I declined a refund at the moment. Not sure if it is worth the hassle and extra money for this CAI but I hope to ultimately receive it and will keep y'all posted.
