Need more info. What were the conditions of the road? Were you turning a lot? Can you explain what "sounded like the serpentine belt broke" means?

Just a guess but sounds like a CV shaft went into mitosis mode and decided to become 2 halves of a shaft.

Sounds like you might have learned the expensive way about turning on pavement in 4x4.

Stock size tires? As mentioned - sounds like you broke a CV axle.

He said it’s normal when in RWD - only present in 4x4. Has to be something forward in the driveline of the front driveshaft.

Right, I'm asking if in 4x4 while not moving does it make the noise. I doubt it, and not sure how it could, but curious.

You should be able to have someone help pin down which side so you know what to pull apart. The part number is the same for either side.

Just curious. Does it make the noise in 4 low too? It might help determine if it’s in the transfer case or the front axle.

hi, really never tried it in low. don't think it's the front axle. cuz in 2wd no noise , would you think it might be the 4wd actuator?

@Cruzer had a problem with his 4x4 once, not sure if the spline shaft snapped or what not but maybe he can chime in on what potentially could be happening when you’re on 4Hi.

If my truck was making those kind of noises, and I did not know what it was.
    Could not pinpoint.
I would bring my truck to a mechanic I trust with a hoist.
One person stays in the truck, raise it, start it, and go through the 2wd, 4wd hi and low.
While another person is underneath listening.
There is not much load on the components in the air but it may allow you to pinpoint the source.

That sounds like a good idea. Maybe it’s just me, but I wouldn’t raise it to high. With truck running, it could vibrate to where it slides off.

Don’t know. I had that problem with my jeep I had years ago. I just had a hard time getting it in and out of 4 wheel drive. No noise like you described.

Based off of this thread and reading the comments, I think YOUR best bet would be to take it to a trusted mechanic.

    Transfer case chain broke.

your t case has two gears (one on main shaft and the other on the output shaft for the frt driveshaft. There is a chain between those gears. In 2wd the gear on the main shaft free wheels (i.e. not connected or pinned to shaft). Putting it in 4wd mode engages that geat to the shaft, thus moving the chain and the other gear, creating 4wd.

sounds like the chain snapped and now the free ends of that chain are swinging around inside the case and slapping on every revolution. Suspect that the rythem of ticking changes with speed. Going to 2wd stops the chain from spinning and the noise stops.

need to stop using 4wd to avoid more damage.

the only thing not spinning in 2wd is the frt driveshaft and the front diff internals. They won’t make this kind of noise. Axle and all wheel parts still spin in 2wd, so can’t be source of noise.

Have you seen the t-case chains? I’ll be shocked if that’s the issue. Not the same transfer case as your 2007.

No, have never seen what the chain looks like on a tundra, though have seen them on others. I was just providing a potential cause that matches the symptoms. I would fully agree that this would be an outlier type problem, but it does match the symptom description. You have heard the phrase "a chain is only as strong as its weakest link?" Certainly feasible that the OP has a chain with a manufacturing defect in a link. No one is perfect and flaws do occur, even if on very small scale.

There are simply not a lot of rotating parts that are only active in 4WD. I can't see how you get ticking in the front diff. Significant flaws there usually cause them to grenade and minor flaws are not likely to create ticking. I suppose it could happen with front drive shaft.

OP says it sounded like something broke followed by a lot of ticking. That really narrows the field of possibilities IF it is an accurate description

Everyone seemed point to axles or something out at the spindle. However, all that stuff also rotates in 2WD, so doesn't match the reported symptoms.
