I've been wanting a bender for a looong time. Stoked to add this capability to the shop!

 

I hope that everyone had a happy Thanksgiving. Plenty of food and family time.

 

It support full mandrel bends?

 

I can add their mandrel attachment at a later date if I have a need to bend thin wall/exotic materials/tight CLR bends.

For now being able to work with the full range of tube sizes used for roll cages,sliders, armor, etc is going to be YUGE!

Welp. Finally got the transmission pan off and tested the “E” SL Solenoid. No clicking sounds so gonna go out on a limb and say it’s the one that needs replacing. Tucked the pan back up on the tranny and will check the others tomorrow just to be sure. Sunset at 5pm sucks. Oh and another thing to be concerned with was the amount of metal shavings in my pan - feck. Although, not sure if it’s good or bad to have that much in the pan at 208k and not a single transmission service in its lifetime. Shall I replace the tranny fluid just to be safe? Like I have said prior, the truck shifts just fine so I’m just gonna clean er up and send it once I can find the part # on this damn solenoid.

Someone please advise on the shavings :/

 

That's way more metal than I'd personally like to see, but I gotta be 1,000% honest: I haven't seen a ton of people drop the pan on more than one, maybe 2 of our trucks.

 

I dropped my pan and it didn't look nearly that bad. All it had was the normal sludge you see. Very similar to what's on rear diff magnet plug.

 

I don't understand the question. By dropping the pan, you're forced the replace the fluid. Unless you were planning to dump your old fluid back in? I would definitely do a few drain and fills over the next 1000 miles or so.

 

More metal than I'd like too. Planning on cleaning her out, replacing that solenoid, and getting all those shavings out then replacing the fluid. Seeing how she goes from there.

Looking at it now I’ll definitely be replacing the fluid. I just recall there being some argument over whether or not you should replace your fluid or not on here, but looking at it now, along with the shavings, I’ll def be doing it.

 

The argument - which for decades I've frankly been extremely skeptical is an urban legend/old wives tale - is that you should never replace fluid on any transmission with unknown or no maintenance history. You'll hear a lot of variations on the "why", like, I think these are two of the more popular ones:

• You need the little bits of clutch material suspended in your fluid that've built up over the years
• Blasting the transmission with loads of modern detergents is bound to break something loose that'll block a passage or jam something up

You'll hear it from all over the place, too. Like, go to any transmission chain store and you're liable to find someone who'll tell you it's unwise. You'll find people who've done it after their transmission was acting funny, lazy-shifting, or showing other signs of bad behavior, and the transmission died shortly after. There's always some story. But I've NEVER seen it in my lifetime, and I've personally owned dozens of vehicles and worked on the vast majority directly.

Have I had anywhere near the volume as a shop? No. But I knew the history on most of those vehicles going back at least a few thousand miles prior, enough to have confidence the transmission wasn't showng signs of disorder.
Have all of my vehicles had electronic transmissions? No. But at least 60% of them were newer vehicles using electronic transmissions.
Have any of my flushes on e-transmissions used pressure flushing? No. I'm convinced in a number of modern transmissions, aggressively pumping fluid through it using an external pump WILL damage a transmission.

Bottom line, and maybe the dose of reality demanding skepticism: Most people don't fully flush their transmission at home. Shops can't possibly know the full history of every transmission that comes in, or what bullshit the owner has done to it, they'd never admit to it, they'd rather have the shop fuck it up and blame them. We can't possibly know how the fluid was exchanged in cases of failure, and if a high-pressure flushing system was used.

tl;dr - I don't buy the 'all-new fluid kills your trans'. Your transmission is already showing signs something was starting to grenade, didn't the 2000-2001 both have the weak planetary that explodes? That could explain what you're seeing.

If you do put all new fluid in, you may want to add a conditioner similar to what @KNABORES dropped in his recently.

 

Not sure about a weak planetary. I’ve got zero experience with transmissions, apart from the PITO it was getting my pan off the past two days. I’ll check out how Knabores went about replacing his fluid. I’m just hoping once all is said and done the CEL turns off and my truck runs like it always has.

 

Re: all-new fluid kills your trans & urban legend/myth.

I've owned ~ 40 automobiles over the years. To the best of my recollection, at least 5 of them were automatic transmissions with high-mileage (i.e. 150k or higher). I performed full-fluid changes in each one and definitely put them through their paces rigorously, at times, and never encountered a single issue. Zero. Pure luck? I don't believe so.

While I can't say where the belief originated from, I would never (and have never) hesitate to do full-fluid changes. I've never had a flush performed, but have to admit to some reluctance to do so. I've always had success with simple drains & fills. Multiple times, if I believed necessary.

 

From the megathread, it’s ‘00-02, and I’m not saying this what you see is what it is. I am not well versed in transmission internals, not ashamed to openly admit it. But in case it helps, and it may not require towing in OD to trigger gears to start eating shit:

• There was an issue in earlier models ('00-02) where the planetary gear suddenly grenades if you tow in OD. Rare, but it's happened enough to see a few threads (one, and another). More than Tundras were affected by this issue.

 

I cheated and simply used super glue to temporarily fix my same exact tear in my weatherstripping. That was just over a year ago. It’s still working for some reason.

So, the solenoid tests bad, but the truck drives normal? Like, shifting it as smooth as it normally is? That’s really weird.
