I am missing a front tow hook.

Passenger side has a front tow hook but driver's side does not. Would it have come from the factory that way?

I'd like to get one if anyone knows where I can buy one.

 

That's the way they come. You can buy a second tow hook easily as they are a generic bolt spacing, (mine came from home depot) you just have to find replacement fine thread bolts. I've done this mod myself, let me do some looking.

It'll be pulled up onto a rollback as early as next week.....do I need the other hook for that?

I enjoy junkyards but I'm just so busy these days. Frankly any day it's not raining or snowing I'm out doing something for somebody so I probably need to just buy another hook.

The other hook location has two bolts.....are those not long enough for the hook?

 

The other side has a flat metal angled piece with an eye in it on mine. The hook is solid square bar material with the hook molded into it. Like these

Are you NOT supposed to tow from the driver side? The "ring" was for tying down while being towed?

 

That's the way I understand it yeah. They just put it there to tie it down to the truck that ships it from the factory to the dealership.

 

Wut? Why can one not tow from the driver's side?

 

It's just that what is on the driver side from factory is technically a hold down to secure it to a transport truck/tow truck etc and it isn't necessarily a strong enough piece to pull something that is stuck out. Do people probably do it on a regular basis, yeah I'm sure they do I'm just saying that's what it's original purpose was.

So if you want to really do it "right" then you get the tow hook like the other side has and use that.

Trucks should be symmetrical....tow hook one side, took hook other side. Same with side mirrors and heck, even steering wheels. Either one on each side or right in the middle!

(I'm cool with it in the middle, bench seat).

Well. I can see why you want tow hooks. But, you do NOT want to pull anything heavy in Reverse. You will load up front end and brake shit. If for recovery, diff story. But I would keep eye and use prope clevice...safer. never pull in reverse with anything IFS. GOOD way to break shit.

 

What is "IFS?"

We might pull a stump we've cut free from its roots, but nothing larger than a landscaping bush. We might pull a car out of a ditch or ourselves be pulled out of a ditch. In a few days I HOPE to be pulled up onto a roll back. (Getting it hauled to a shop for timing belt replacement. Just too many miles to risk starting it again).

Got the hooks today but haven't opened the package.

 

mind the stump pulling. Our trucks don’t weigh that much and it doesn’t take much of a sapling to jerk the truck to a dead stop. Also throw something heavy over the tow chain so that if it breaks, it will stay close to the ground or through the grill/radiator and not through the windshield. If you have a good dentist, then there’s no need to pay heed.

 

Ha! Got ya beat! Pulled all my teeth and had "Jaws" stainless steel inserts installed. LOL

When we remove a stump we cut all roots away from it. Truck only pulls it out of the hole, not roots out.

All of my trucks see a fair amount truck type of use (abuse?). I've tried pulling a few small stumps out of our family orchard with my tundra (since my heavy old 71 F250 is currently under the knife). Those little stumps would rock my tundra to a dead stop. I ended up borrowing my sister's Ram 3500 cummins crewcab in order to get the weight needed. Her truck plucked it out of the ground...on the third try. I'm not going to bother anyone with my ignorance (stupidity) with my past stories of snapping chains and cables when retrieving other vehicles, skidding trees, or jerking on tree stumps. Somehow i'm still alive, but i have had multiple instances where i've damaged my trucks with errant chains.

 

depends on stump size, but yeah, not sure i'd try backing a stump out...maybe weighting down the bed for traction and w/4wd, straight ahead.
Or, since you 'bot 2 pull', just rent a small JDeere or Bobcat trakhoe for a day. They come on trailers that a FGT should be capable of tow, no?

 

Just don’t wrap the tow strap around your trailer hitch ball. I’ve seen some ball failures with fatal results. There was one in Kingman in 2022 that got a lot of media attention because the guy in the vehicle being towed out of the mud got the ball in the face.

 

You guys clearly have no idea how small the bushes are we are removing for home owners.

Not sure when I'll put the tow hook on. Plan to mow all day tomorrow (surely the last mowing day of 2024), then odd jobs all rest of the week. MAY go look at a dump truck I want to buy towards the end of the week (assuming he still has it).

some of those small bushes have so many doggone roots that it makes it almost unrealistic to dig up with a shovel. I winched out a couple bamboo root balls with my very heavy 71 ford highboy 4x4 flat bed dumpbed. I ended up dragging the winch cable on my warn 8274 winch into the back yard of a house (in a city neighborhood). I had to use two different snatch blocks in order to snake the cable through the side fence, then around a corner. it still took some doing to pull it out. Point being, even small bushes can put up a hard fight.

 

If it turns out that they’re sturdy, then i can see them being MUCH more useful than the hooks!
