    Lots of stuff!
A little flex in that joint caused the paint to crack. They painted over the piece of trim or moulding that's there. Should have been 2 stages of paint minimum. Now water will get in and make a mess or freeze and make it worse! Trip to the dealer is required I think!

Those strips on my tundra are raw black plastic, not painted. My truck is black, but I’m pretty sure they shouldn’t be painted. Google search shows unpainted on the images I’ve seen.

Mine has the black plastic, not painted, on the back of cab towards the front for about 4 inches, then it terminates and goes to paint.

That is a some sort of hardening filler that Toyota as well as other vehicle manufacturers use to fill this assembly joint. Once it hardens they paint over it. It could just be the paint cracking or worse yet the actual filler. Either way this is not normal and needs to be inspected by your dealer and repaired.

Looks to me like the filler is separating/splitting/coming apart. What ever it is it is not good. Would be curious to find out what they say and what they do to fix it. Best of luck.

It isn't. The vehicle was likely damaged in transport and fixed by the dealership. I've seen it a few times. Fix and neglect to inform anyone of the repair.

On your paint ones you can see the plastic piece under it with its edges. The OP’s seems like it’s filled with something so you can’t see the actual plastic trim underneath.

This is the kind of material automotive manufacturers use but it's applied by robots and most likely smoothed out by robots too.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N1q8S6c3-xg

Looking closer at the pictures I think the sealer is actually cracked. There are a number of reasons this could happen.

    - improper mixing of sealer
    - sealer has batch defect or expired
    - improper cleaning of surfaces prior to sealing
    - sealer not cured or off gassed prior to painting

Only way to fix this properly is grind out the old sealer, properly prep the joint and redo the seam and repaint. I don't think I would allow them just to fill the cracks in and repaint unless they gave me a very long warranty that it will not crack again. I would also want them to do the entire seam on both sides of the truck and not just local to where the cracks are. Once one starts odds are that another one is just lurking to pop up.

I hope the dealer takes care of you well.

Looks like seam sealer cracked, to me. I’m going to guess Toyota put a sheet metal seam there, filled it poorly by the FNG, and painted over. Or bad/improperly handled batch of seam sealer.

Oh, and FWIW, my ‘98 GMT400 had similar issues with seam sealer failing above the ext cab doors that let water into the headliner, and next to the hood hinges at the cowl which let water saturate the floors. Only saying this to say, “that shit happens with every manufacturer”, but I’ve never seen it THAT bad before! Classic seam sealer fail though!!

Thanks for everyones input, I've contacted 3 separate dealerships, all 3 agree it "Appears" to be faulty seam sealer. They also said they would have to get approval from corporate Toyota for any type of warranty body repair. I'll keep yall posted.
