Oil leak

I will continue to monitor but it was down over a quart between the 3rd to last change and 2nd to last, this time it was not down any. Strange. I also asked about going up one step in oil weight to see if that would slow it even more and he said it was a bad idea. What do you guys think?

 

I want them to fix a known leak! I don’t want my truck leaking any oil at all!

 

The engines on new Tundras are blowing up? Is that what you meant to say? If so that’s terrible. So what would we all buy for our next vehicle?

 

Used 2nd gen once again, if it were me. Still can be had with low miles.

 

Yea sorry over 100,000 of the new model Tundras are Blowing up/ main bearing failures ect from metal shavings left in engines when made. Toyota is replacing the whole long block in over 100k of them. I'm just trying to say someone who has a little oil leak at 7 years is doing pretty good.

 

Sounds to me like you need to either stick with leases or buy an electric car. This is just unrealistic for used cars without constantly throwing money at them.

 

I only have 50,000 miles on my truck and have the same leak. I'm pissed off about it honestly. The more stuff like this becomes normalized/trivialize, the more we're going to have to deal with it in the future.

I don't know. I might think differently if it wasn't my truck too.

 

Here is my take - I think that the famed Toyota reliability has created an unrealistic sustainable expectation. It had been sooooo good for soooooo long that people flocked to it. Additionally, they historically stood behind any issues that others would have denied with the quickness (frame rust recalls are still being done in some cases). We can debate all day long about what SHOULD be done morally vs what should be done corporately…..but I still believe in the brand.

That said, if I had one of the trucks that was giving me problems like the small percentage of 3rd gens or the cam tower leaks I may feel differently.


Finally I also think this is a product of having such an engaged and enthusiastic following. Having a forum like this that explain cam tower leaks, etc and when to worry, how to approach, etc is worth it weight in gold. I go here for many of my concerns before calling a mechanic, dealership, etc.

It’s kind of a double edged sword honestly. Both can be true = it can STILL be a great brand with reliability AND there can still be issues that could be handled better.

 

This is the response I mostly align with. Unrealistic expectations or not. $50,000 plus for a truck. A reliable Toyota truck. Please don’t normalize the idea of leaking oil. I hate that my engine leaks oil. Period.

Hey Boodles, if it’s a cam tower leak, would you see oil on the timing cover? As in your original pic? Aren’t those leaks more on the side of the motor? Did you look up thru the wheel wells? I wonder if it’s not something else leaking?

 

It’s usually the front crank seal when it’s coming out of the timing cover.

If you don’t have to add oil between oil changes - absolutely not imo.

 

I would run 5w-30 if it's losing a quart between oil changes

Geez this sure went to shit real fast. Cam tower seals are a "known" possible concern when buying this gen. Does it kill engines? No. It it an issue, yes.

Does a chicken shitting right by your door be known as a concern, sure, does it cause major issues to your feet? No.

Take the dad joke with a grain of salt. If you purchased these trucks new, and still own it as I do, you know of it. You also had it fixed. For those who purchase used vehicles with 80-100k miles, you may need to splurge for the extended warranties or do your research before buying said vehicle. This goes for any make/model. Toyota is known to be reliable as Honda is. However, they are still made on lines like every other make.

In the end, 1qt of oil/month won't kill your rig as long as you stay on top of it. No it won't help it either, but it's on you to get it fixed. Yes it sucks, get the seal repaired. I had my driver side cam tower replaced. It was under warranty but I think the bill stated around $1,800 out the door.

Just kidding of course on your side of things. Seriously though, you "could" run thicker oil but in the end only correcting the issue will help in this case.

 

2025 update on your oil leak?

 

It still leaks oil! I am not paying $5000 to fix it. So far it’s not dripping enough to hit the ground.

 

Is it coming from the oil filter cap or somewhere else?
