Tundra is a misnomer; the truck is not tuned for cold weather!

people up here use studded tires on winter rims then switch out for summer tire/wheel combo. in 30+ years never needed studded or chains, but then again, if its to that point i just stay home, easier all around. and in 30+ years, i have only turned around going to work 2-3 times. mostly white out conditions. i have a video i uploaded recording the attempt to drive to work once. used the rumble strips to stay on the road, but that didnt always work and decided not worth it and found a turn around.

this was in my 4runner, jump to around 10 min mark, then it just gets worse from there. the clear spots are due to tree lines on side of the road blocking the wind. once i get to about 18 min mark i start looking for a turn around. the last lighted sign is a known left turn from that business so i decided to turn around after trying to go further. i turn around at the 23:56 min mark after i spot a road street sign.

I don't think 20 seconds under typical conditions is normal. My truck has less than 1000 miles on it, and it switches back and forth in a few seconds every time. (My experience is that Toyota's electronic transfer case switches take a few dozen usage cycles / a few thousand miles to "loosen up" and switch quickly.) The other poster earlier was also correct - it won't be able to switch if you're under load (e.g. climbing a hill), you need to let off the throttle for a split second to relax the drivetrain so it can shift. A *slight* steering input will also help as it forces a slight speed differential between the front and rear driveshaft, allowing the clutches in the transfer case to align. The cold could have caused your initial problem, but if yours is taking 20 seconds under more normal conditions, something else may be amiss.

 

Seems the winter in Shuswap is milder than northern Canada. Nice to have such a garage. Shouldn't the heated garage be an option with the Tundra? LOL

 

Thanks!. My Tundra has 3000 miles, and I switched from 4H to 2H around many times when driving between an icy/snowy mountain road and the groomed freeway.

I will experiment later, adding a *slight* steering input, as the weather will get warmer. We have still snow here.

 

Opposite deal for me. 80F is uncomfortably hot. At 85 and above, I literally die.

You're right. What I hate is the overcharge for spares, noticed with many car manufacturer. In the 1980' BMW was infamous for it, later came Nissan. Sadly this example shows that Toyota did join that club.

 

Well yeah! If my calculations (Google) are correct, that's 104º F, that's hot no matter who ya' are!

I thank my parents often for birthing me where it's basically 72º for life. Yes, as far as real weather goes it's made me soft... but it's made me comfy.

 

Now, by warmer weather, the transfer case switches within a second. Load or not, curve or straight. I am convinced that the very cold weather was the issue. Maybe the Tundras should be tested somewhere North

 

Now colder again here. -3C. The switch from 4H to 2H takes 30 seconds again. Wonder how long it will take as the thermometer will drop to -35C or F....
When the sun is just a few degrees above the horizon the very nice grooves on the hood mean a constant glare...

The name Tundra for this poorly built truck is just marketing. Toyota's engineer deserve an extended stay for North.

@Balzac Maybe there is an "Arctic" trim that is being offered? Comes with heated coffee cup holders and an electric rescue blanket!

My Tundra performs flawlessly in the sub zero temperatures. Can't say the same about my F1-Shitty at work.

 

Canadian owners seems to complain continuously about the truck and dealers. The truck and the dealers don't seem to work well in Canada. Maybe Toyota should pull out of the market?

 

It is a different situation in Canada. Toyota Canada isn't the same as what you get in the states. They are more like the top of a multilevel marketing scheme. The dealers make up the bottom of the pyramid.

We don't have lemon laws or consumer protection of any sort so we are basically helpless.

We also don't have anyone else to bitch to. It is a lonely place up here in the frozen waste land.

All I can say is that I really appreciate the Gen 2 folks to help us complain

Fairly sure all models of Tundra support remote start from the fob.
Press lock-lock-lock(hold). Hold on third press till lights flash.
Timing is critical on button pushes and range is limited.
No subscription required.

 

Must be vaporware. Mo mention of the lock-lock-lock(hold) in the manual.

 

No vehicle runs good in extreme weather.

 

Ya, you need to have it plugged in all the time to a block heater or forget about even starting it!
