My wheels are too big and heavy.

So when putting the wheels back on tonight (we finished the LBJ replacement at 8 PM tonight) I realized that those tires and wheels are just too heavy!

Further, all I have is 1/8" of space between the upper control arm and the tire's sidewall! :eek2:

    That's not normal is it?

I'll get some measurements of my wheels tomorrow and add to this post. I'll also get the dimensions of the tires.

If we can't get something smaller and lighter, we will have to get a AAA membership in case of a flat.

    2006 4 Door Tundra, V8, "Limited"

Edit: had a look today before the drizzle came.

    Wheels: 18 1/2 inches

    Tires: Hercules M+S 265/70 R 17

If your tire is only about 1/8" away from the A-arm, then you have larger wider tires than stock.
The stock tire, isnt tall enough to touch the A-arm
The stock tire, isnt wide enough to get that close to the A-arm
You must have a larger, wider tire to get anywhere near the A-arm.
Yes its quite normal after you get larger wider tires, on stock'ish offset rims, the tire will be very close and sometimes touch the A-arm.
My first set of tires i bought for my truck, rubbed the A-arm so bad i had to go with narrower tires. Big bummer really. I didnt wanna do spacers and i wanted to run a specific wheel that was only slightly different offset from the OEM wheel. That wheel with the combination of a wide tire made sweet love to the A-arm.
My current 275/55-20 are only about 3 business cards away from the A-arm at ride height, but touch when you jack the truck up higher.

Well, it is normal to have a tire that close in that spot, but it’s out of unknowingly poor decision caused by lack of ignorance. Big tires just don’t fit our IFS trucks that well. I feel as though my BFG AT 265/75-16 tires (mounted on the stock rims) are a pinch too close to the upper A arm (and i got about 3/4”~ish space).

I think i speak for everyone that we want to see pics!

..."lack of ignorance." Wouldn't that be a good thing, to not have ignorance? LOL

I suspect the first owner put these wheels on and those were never changed. The last owners were up in their years, in fact, the man who sold it to me died about two weeks later. Gentleman was up in his 70's and pretty frail----so I doubt these big tires were his idea.

Tires are new though.....appears to be an aggressive tread.

We have a week of rain and snow inbound but if I catch a break, I'll see if the wife can get a good pic. My flip phone's camera doesn't take good pics for some reason (LOL).

What was the stock tire size for a 2006 Tundra V8 Limited Double Cab?

ha! you got me on that one. Double negatives cancel it out!

I think the limited came with 265/65-17? As a reference point, the 2000 SR5 came with lil’ 245/70-16’s.

I know I should have tire and wheel measurements but it was after dark when we finished and I was too tired and too sore to look at those.

I'll have the wife hold an umbrella tomorrow and I'll get those for you guys.

I've never even bothered to look with my LT265/75/16 tires, never rubbed so they must be good. Maybe tomorrow I'll peak and wish I hadn't.

Oh gosh, chains! I didn't even think about that.

Few years ago chains are all that allowed me to reach Okemo Ski Resort in Vermont and all that allowed me to get back to the motel. When I left the resort snow was level with the bottom of the doors and gaining.

No way chains would fit on my Tundra, not on the front anyway. I'll get that info tomorrow for sure!

Oh really? That sucks. My Honda Accord was Master of Icy Roads with chains.

So the computer-controlled Tundra can't handle chains on all four wheels huh? Sad.

90% of the time i have my main set of tires mounted on my truck. They’re a small and skinny 215/85-16. Those tires are short enough that the upper A arm isn’t a factor, but there still really isn’t any room for chains on the front. The reason being is that the tire’s sidewall would still be too close the upper portion of the spindle (aka, steering knuckle).

From a discussion I recall from the other day I think it was determined that there just isn't room in the front for chains even on stock size tires.

Nothing to do with computers (even though none of the 4wd system is computer controlled in a Tundra). Has to do with front wheel well clearance and the equipment involved with IFS. You could still run a snow sock on the front and chains on the back.

2006 stock tire was 265/65r17*, and you can get 1" taller than that without adding width that would put you closer to the suspension by running 265/70r17.

The big question we need to know is what wheels you're running. I suspect you're running non-Tundra wheels with a piss-poor backspace for our trucks, i.e. something with 5"+ backspace.

Lexus also. Like, the Lexus 6 spokes @455h0le_dachshund and a few others are running have 5.5" backspace which is crazy to me.

My buddy had 285/75r16 on his 01 with stock tundra wheels and it rubbed the stock uppers, so I sold em a set of 1.25" spider Trax spacers I wasn't using and that solved it
    You could probably do 1"

I made sure when I did wheels and tires, I researched to find the lightest wheels and tires I could find. I ended up with Nitto Terragrappler in p285/75/17 C load and FN wheels. Comes out if I remember to about 70 lbs. My old set up was about 100 lbs...makes a difference. Try to find C rated tires.....way lighter and the D and E rated sidewalls made the truck ride like a jackhammer. They are overkill.

Edited the rim diameter and tire markings into the first post.

    AWilliams...thanks, might look into that.

455...spacers? Will that make my tires stick out past the fenders?

Not sure what 18 1/2" wheels means exactly when you have 17" tires on them. A pic of the wheel would be most helpful.

I measured the rim from one side to the other. Pretty sure I did that right but ????

If it isn't raining too badly tomorrow I'll put the tape measure back up and let the wife take a pic.

We really need to see (at least) a picture of your wheel. There's almost nothing we can do unless we track it back to a known model, and try to extract the width and offset of the physical wheel itself.

Those tidbits are exactly what will dictate how to proceed/fix your issue.

Clearly it's a 17" wheel. I'm guessing you measured the face of the wheel edge to edge.

Well I did a search....apparently you don't go from the edge to the edge. Inside edge to inside edge or something?

    I'll try again tomorrow.

Not necessary... You already gave us the tire size, which has the wheel diameter of 17". 265/70R17, where R is rim and 17 is its diameter in inches.
What we need to know is what wheels you have, so we can find the specs for width, backspacing, and offset.

Then we can better understand what you're working with and help you resolve your issue.. pics would be helpful if you don't know what wheels you have.

For starters, are the wheels OEM Toyota wheels or aftermarket?
